Senior Banquet
It finally came-the 23rd day of May and eighteen joyous boys "bum- med" down to the Columns one by one between five and six o'clock that
afternoon. Of course, everyone was there by the appointed time and es- corted to the exclusive back room (to get us out of sight) except "Pussy- footin' Jones" who stagger-oops- stumbled in after "Lum" Pearson had eaten his salad and started his offers for everyone else's. While these ''thirsty" eighteen were waiting for the main course, the nuts and mints and everything in sight that was eat- able disappeared.
Then after the appetizer, the main course of steak, french fries, and other trimmings were brought in, including some of the best rolls--oh man were they good. Of course the french fries had to be flown in from Ger- many on the "Small Lift" under the Marsha Lubeerhoffal Plan because of the potato shortage. But they were quickly Americanized to our hungry stomachs.
The boys in the bock of the room were quiet. Though I don't know why. Guess they weren 't too hungry or were filled up with something! And eighteen luscious strawberry short- cakes were then brought in and these (after the main course) were devoured slowly and "Lum" collected the scraps which some were not able to get down. Then the speeches began, in- troduced by Mr. Bondurant, Mr. "Lum-Dum" was first but because of stage fright he just twitched his nose and mumbled a word or two and didn't stand up in spite of cheers and laughter. Then we almost got a speech (Yegad) from a Mr. J elly somebody, introduced by Mr. Chat- ham from Longhorns Jonesville. He stood up and started by that familiar line "I don't have much" (amid Roh- Rahs) to say tonight but-." Thank heavens he sat down after a few hints and pinches by his fellow banqueters. After "Lum" collected the tips and pocketed them twice we finally got him to put them on the table.
Most of them left to go see "Sing- in' in the Rain" and after seeing the enjoyable movie they "beep-beeped" down to the ever famous "Pink Car- nation" where they finished (Hie) the evening or the evening (Hie) fin- ished th em or something! No one knows exactly! Of course that old

clock rolled around t o twelve very
soon and the eighteen no longer "thirsty" (but full of something be- sides dinner) boys arrived at the prison grounds and were "Spiked" to their bunks. It was a great night and I think all enjoyed it to the very end.
