Homecoming Weekend Climaxed By Superb Dance In Gym
Bonfire
The annual homecoming weekend was started on the night of Friday the 17th of October at 9:30 p.m. when the V.E.S. students surged out of the East door, led by the co- c a p t a i n s o f t h e V .E.S . Bishops, T al Kemper and Joe Barber. The torch bearing co-captains led the crowd down to the corner of Williams Road and V.E.S. Road where a pile of brush and wood, previously collected, was set afire. The cheerleaders, Phil Braxton, Hose McClure and Paul Ful- ton led the crowd in time honored V.E.S. cheers. When the cry went up for head coach Walt Schulte, ·rhe noise was so loud that one Peakland resident a mile away thought the world was coming t o an end. No less voiciferous were the cheers that greeted the speeches by assistant coach "Rock" Lee and ·rhe co-cap- tains, Barber and Kemper. A t one point there were concentrated cries for guard "Wimpy" Chandler, b:Jt that gridiron gargantua evaded pur- suers and remained silent on his opinions of the contest ahead. The bonfires and cheers finished with the chanting of "Poor Woodberry," and
the exuberant boys lifted the coaches to their shoulders and marched back to school, tired, hoarse, but happy.
The Game
Although the game didn't fulfill our fondest dreams, we were proud or Saturday when the Bishops, sparked by such players as Wimpy Chandler, Bob Hughes, Milt Barber, Jungle Wiley and Joe Barber along with the drive and dig of the other members of the team, put up a terrific fight against a stronger W oodberry eleven. It may be credited to the Bishops' fightinq heart thC~t not only were they able to stand off the more powerful team for almost three quar-
tars, but in that time they scored a touchdown for themselves. M u c h credit can also be given to the fine display of school spirit evident on the sidelines. With such spirit in V.E.S.'s heart its body may be broken and twisted but its spirit goes on un- daunted.
The Dance
After a week of painting, thumb- tacking, stapling and general back- breaking toil, the old gym was trans- formed into a magnificent collection of red, white and blue streamers. Guests to the dance were greeted on all sides by political cartoons and patrio- tic symbols in keeping with the elec- tion season. The guests danced on the well waxed floor to the music of the V.M.I. Commanders led by Teddy Benson, a former V.E.S. student. Monty White, also a V.E.S. alumnus, held down the drummer's spot for the band. Refreshments were served at intermission in the "V" Club room. With the host of gallant young gentle- men and the plentiful number of charming young ladies the affair was a tremendous success. There were over 50 couples present.
