THE END IS THE PRESENT
Time was all I needed. Time and a little perfection. Bent down in front of the tiny safe, listening for the click that would open thatJrecious piece of steel, I remembere the article in the morning's paper, diamond ship- ment having been delivered to Tern- pie's Jewelry to be sorted before be- ing sent to New York. One guard watched the back door, and he was quickly disposed of by a thin wire around his neck. This job was almost routine for me, "Duke" W arren, picked up in four safe-cracking jobs, sentenced for none.
Tonight meant almost eighty grand and I could almost smell it as I moved to the last of the series. The door opened and all hell broke loose. An alarm that would have raised the dead sounded. Not forgetting what I came for, I grabbed the jewels and dashed for the exit in the back. As I went out, a small ragged girl stood in the alley, clutching a torn doll in one hand and digging in a garbage
can for food with the other. She stood in my way, and I let my feet trample her frail body. I started across the street and the vision of the little girl flashed in my mind. I hestitated a moment, and then I saw two glaring headlights in the street just inches away and heard a siren in my ears. Then I knew that the end was the present.
