THE V CLUB SALUTES . . .
{As a new fe~ture to THE METEOR, the V Club is going to s~lute one or two non- .lettermenine~chissueforoutst~ndingcon- tribution to school life. We re~lize thot there ore m~ny boys who ~re doing fine work and
we feel th~t thoy should be recognized.) The V Club solutes Lawrence Lon-
don and Mike Laurie for the month of October.
Lawrence made a tremendously valuable contribution to the V Club dance held on October I. He install- ed and operated his high fidelity record player for the entire dance and many people commented on it. In fact, some said that it was bet- ter than any bond we have ever had!
Mike also made a grand contribu- tion to the V Club by giving of his time and service to keep the door, selling tickets and refreshments. His cheerfulness and willingness to work is to be highly commended.

THE SEASON PREVIEW By Coach Rock Lee
weight and this year's experience added.
Tay Byrum (6' I", 165) has handled nearly all the quarterbacking so far. He is an excellent ball handler and a good play caller. Close behind him is ~utch Watkins (5'9", 145), who prom- rses to be a good passer in the near future. He turned in a good job at safety in the A. M. A. game.
Lee Mastin (5'7", 135) looks like a real find at left halfback. He is very quick on outside plays and hits sur- prisingly hard up the middle. Steve Cowper (6', 175) and Frank Craig hill (5'9", 145) are fighting it out at left halfback. Steve is a fine blocker and a power runner and Frank shakes his hi~s well and is a top flight pass re- cerver.
Bootie Cranz (6', 210) runs hard from fullback and plays stringside tackle on defense. Captain "Os" is quite a valuable man. Pat McNulty (6', 180) looks good as a replacement.
. Several other boys have been given lrttle chance as yet, but have possi- bilities. Larry Arnett (5'9", 145), half- back and line backer; Danny Payne (5 ' 10", 150), halfback; Keith Porter (6', 175), guard; Charley Jeffress (6', 140), end; David DeVere (5'10", 150), end; and Frank Gunter (5'11", 166), guard, are among this group.
Lloyd Horton (5'9", 152) played a good game at defensive end for us against A. M. A. and Ray Marley (5'9", ISO) has given a steady per- formance at safety in both games. He also runs well from halfback.
Tommy Jamison (6', ISO) has done a beautiful job as our extra point man (2 for 3) and on kickoffs (sev- eral in the 55-yard class).
A t
of the V. E. S. football team has a 1-1 record. We had high hopes that the record would be 2-0, but an improved Miller School team with some fancy pass plays and a bad day on the part of the Bishops resulted in a 25-14 loss. Considerable improvement was shown in the past week's 20-6 win at A. M. A. However, the remainder of our schedule is loaded with big tough improved teams and we still have a long way to go.
Over all, this year's team is rather young and inexperienced. W e are go- rng to suffer from a lack of speed in our offensive line. Defensively, we have size and possibilities up front, but we are inexperienced and small in the secondary. Our offensive ba.cks are small, but may develop our of- fense into a real threat by mid-season.
Hardy Dillard, one of three cap- tains, is our number one end pass grabber. At six feet, 142 pounds, he also stands out as a defensive half- back. Blacky Stith (6'2", 155), a new boy, is our right end, and shows prom- ise of becoming a good pass receiver. Gil Sayres (6'6", 190), playing his first yea r of football, and George Ross (6', 145) are also in the end pic-

John Brady (5'9", 190) and Cap- tain Cloyd Philpot (5'6", 215) are our starting tackles. Both are veterans a~d.. good. blockers. Starke Mundy (6 3 , 215) rs the number one offensive tackle replacement and is a starting guard on defense. He needs experi- ence and will get plenty of it in a hurry. His performance so far is a big improvement over last season.
Joe Dulaney (5' I0", 175) leads a four-way fight at guard, where we lack experience. Steve Royal (5'I0",
190), Nelson Showalter (5' II", 160), and Bobby Gillespie (5' I0", 160), are struggling hard for the other spot. Dulaney a starting guard on defense, where he is at his best, and Royal have played both games at defensive tackle.
Jimmy Bickford (5'10", 160), only a sophomore, has played both games all the way at center. He is on alert, aggressive worker who should be quite a ball player next year with
