NEW V. E. S. MASTERS
V. E. S. welcomes five new masters to its staff for the year of 1955-56, including two alumni of the school.
Mr. William Wiatt Field, one of the alumni, was graduated in 1945. The following year he attended Hampden-Sydney in Farmville, Vir- ginia, where he graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Upon graduation he went to Staunton Mili- tary Academy, Staunton, Virginia, where he taught Latin and coached track. Under his coaching, the track team won two state championships. He will assist in coaching track and weight lifting at V. E. S. He teaches Latin, English I, and will soon begin a course in reading. Mr. Field is a grandson of Rt. Rev. Robert C. Jett, who founded V. E. S., and who was also Bishop of the Diocese of South- western Virginia. His senior year at V. E. S., Mr. Field, along with Mr.

Robert Lee, wrote "God of Mercy," which is in ou r hymnal. Mr. Field 's home is in Roanoke, Virginia.
The other alumni, Mr. Frank Aldred, attended V.E.S. from 1943-46. Up- on graduation he attended Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina, and Roanoke College, Salem, Virginia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1950. He then re- turned to V. E. S. as a teacher and coach until midyear, and being a member of the Naval Reserve was called to active duty in January of
1951. He went to Officer Candidate School after several months and re- ceived a commission in May of 1952. In December of 1952 he was in Korean water aboard fhe carrier " Phil ippine Sea," which saw action. In May of 1954 he returned and boarded the carrier " Hornet" for a round the world cruise which ended in December of that year. He was discharged upon return and married in J a n u a r y , 1955, t o Mis s Phoe"be King of Bon Air, Virginia. Mr. Aldred is teaching history and is assistant football coach.
Mr. Ralph Boersma of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a graduate of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, where he received an A.B. Degree. In 1951 -52 Mr. Boersma went to Europe where he studied at the Uni- versity of Zurich in Switzerland and the University of Heidelberg in Ger- many. Upon his return he attended the University of Maryland Graduate School and will receive his Master of Arts Degree within t he next year. Mr. Boersma saw action in World War II as a staff sergeant in the

U. S. Air Force. He was stationed in
England a n d
Germany as an aerial gunner on a B-17. He teaches French and Ger- man at V. E. S.
Mr. Robert Butz graduated from Florida Southern College in 1954. He attended the University of Florida Graduate School the past year and plans to get his Master's in the near
future. He teaches biology, chem- istry, and physics at V. E. S. Mr. Butz is a native of Orlando, Florida.
Mr. Robert A. Higdon is from Richmond, Virginia. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and then on to Randolph- Macon College in Ashland , Virginia, where he received an A. B. Degree in the Spring of this year. Mr. Higdon teaches mathematics, algebra, and
general science.
