LIBRARY NEWS
The Virginia Episcopal School Lib- rary has added over a hundred volumes to its collection since the beginning of the school year. Some of the most interesting and useful ac- quisitions were gifts of the head- master, alumni, and other friends of the school.
The library has been particularly fortunate this fall in the additions which have been made in the field of science. Dr. Pau l Walker, a professor at Randolph-Macon, donated several books, among them "Biology and Its Makers, " "Biology of Vertebrates,"
A Handbook of Flowering Plants and Ferns," ''The Principles of Heredity," and ' Developmental Anatomy." These books have already been rather widely used by students of biology in preparing t erm papers and i'l doing other supplementary work. An- other important addition to the library's material in the fie ld of biology is a three volume set, "The Animal Kingdom." This is a very com- plete work, illustrated with pen and ink sketches, photographs, and color plates, and covers the world of animals from the amoeba to the ape. "The World of Plant Life," although shorter, provides the equivalent scope of information about plants; and "Magic Bullets" gives an introduction to the study of microbes with parti- cular emphasis on man's fight against disease-causing microbes and other destructive bacteria.
Additions have been made to vari- ous other scientific subjects. "The Sea and Its Rivers" gives a fascinat- ing description of the little-known undersea geography, currents, and other facts. "The Field Book of Com-
mon Rocks and Minerals" is a useful guide to the interesting and often unnoticed stones and pebbles we see around us every day. "You and the Atom" and "The Changing Uni- verse" deal with phases of scientific investigation which are certainly widely different, but which are be- coming increasingly important in the modern world . "Electrons, W aves, and Messages" gives an explanation of much of modern communication, while "Electronics Made Easy" chal- lenges boys to a practical applica- tion-it is a "do it yourself" book published by the Popular Mechanics P r e s s . " T h e N e w E r a o f Fl i g h t " describes the working of jet aircraft
and of aeronautics in a world of supersonic spe13d.
