THEME OF THE MONTH: SOCIETY
Today in modern America we have an institution which we call society. Our society in itself is a good thing; we could not do without it, for we as men, are social animals. It estab li shes cert ain laws and precedents which we, as individuals, must obey or be looked upon as social outcasts.
By the laws of society we don't mur· der, steal, or commit any other such flagrant crimes. Yes, society is a fine institution.
Yet it contains may laws which are nonessential, and sometimes even cruel. The worst law of society is the non-acceptance of those who are not on our own level. Certainly, in order to be accepted in our own society we must "be nice" to those of the lower class, but we are frowned upon if we accept them. It is very easy to drop money into a beggar's cup, but when i t c o mes t o a c c e p t i n g him, well, that's another matter. We de· votedly give our time and money to welfare organizations who help the needy, but do we, as members of our society, give our time and ef- f o r t t o mix with t h e s e p e o p l e , to help them ourselves? No, t h a t just isn't done in the proper circles- as many p e o p l e s p e a k o f t h e Negro, "Oh, we like them in their place." And I ask, "What place!" In our society what place have those who, by fate or circumstance, are beneath
us? Even though man is a sociable
