1959 Winner of FIRST PLACE aword for schools of less than 200 Students, in SIPA competition.
Exams: A Responsibility
Each and every student is faced with exams, which are now only a few weeks away, and with these come the responsibilities which are always more evident to students in a time of real testing.
First, there is a responsibility to do the best he can on each and every one of his exams. Not only is a student responsible to himself for his performance, but he is responsible to his parents, who have paid for his educational opportunities, and to his teachers, who have given their time and efforts to provide those oppor- tunities.
Secondly, a student taking an exam is responsible for his future. Each year college and prep school competition becomes more intense; boys who have good records in their senior years have been turned down by colleges because their 9th and IOth grade performances were not up to par. A good record must be consistently good if the needs of the future are to be met.
Last, but perhaps most important, there is the responsibility of Honor. In some instances, particularly borderline students, there is a strong temptation, and adequate opportunity, to cheat on examinations. Whether or not the student gets caught is not the real issue, although getting caught has severe consequences.
The really important things are: Can a student live with him- self after he has cheated? Can a student watch a fellow student cheat with a clear conscience? The answers to both of these ques- tions should be an emphatic, "NO!"
