NEW AWARDS OFFERED FOR SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT
This year, for the first time, the faculty has voted to present awards for scholastic excellence in the vari- ous areas of the V.E.S. curriculum, and has changed the title of the school's most important medal, the
1959 FINALS HELD; HONOR COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED
The Final Exercises for the 19S8- S9 school year were held on the cam- pus on the morning of June 6th, at which time diplomas, certificates, prizes and awards were presented to the members of the Senior Class and the members of the student body.
Dr. Robert McGill, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, opened the ceremonies with the invocation, and immediately thereafter, the Head- master presented certificates of dis- tinction to those members of the student body who received a passing average on all courses taken during the school year. The Honor Roll, consisting of students who averaged
90 or better during the session was read, and certificates were presented.
The Prizes in English Composition were presented to members of the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Forms, and the Superior Scientific Scholar- ship award to the member of the student body who showed the most proficiency in Physics and Chemistry.
The prizes for the best overall schola rship for boys IS and under, and for boys over IS were awarded, and the Big Brother prize, given to the boy who is most helpful to the new boys in adjusting to life at V.E.S. was presented.
The athletic prizes and awards in- cluded the School Athletic Cup and the Prize for the best non-letter man. The Elmer Irving Carruthers, Jr. Me moria! trophy and medal went to the boy who has maintained a high scholastic average and has received a varsity letter during his career as a student.
The School Medal for Character, Leadership, and Service, which was formerly the Adair Archer Memorial Medal. was presented to Penn Jos- lyn, a member of the Honor Com- mittee, and Turner Bunn, President
of the Senior Class, presented the class gift: a check to cover the cost of installing screens in the windows
of the school study hall.
After the preser.~ation of certifi- cates and diplomas, the Headmaster announced the members of the Hon- or Committee for 19S9-60, and Dr. McGill delivered the benediction, bringing the 19S9-60 school session to an end.

The standards of character, leader- ship, and service which were the re- quirements of this medal have re- mained the same; the new name for the award is The School Medal for Character, . Leadership, and Service. In addition to this change, awards have been designated for presenta- tion to the best students in the various fields of endeavor.
The prize for excellence in Ameri- can history is awarded to the History V student who has demonstrated a good understanding of the subject matter, and who has maintained con- sistently high grades throughout the course. The prize is a copy of The American Past, a pictorial history of the United States.
The prize for excellence in Modern Languages is awarded to the ad- vanced student in French, German, or Spanish who has demonstrated
the most proficiency in the language he has chosen. A dictionary or book concerning the particular language is given to the recipient.
The prize for excellence in Latin
is awarded to the student com-
pleting Caesar who has the highest
scholastjc average. The Greek
Myths, by Robert Graves, has been selected as the prize.
The prizes for excellence in chem- istry and physics are awarded to the two students who have the most ability and scholastic proficiency in these courses. The prize is a copy of The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.
