HOMECOMING DANCE
IS SUCCESSFUL

1-'omecoming Dance t h e n i g h t o f Saturday, November the seventh. The spir:ts of all refused to be dampened by the loss to EHS in the football game that afternoon and everyone ~ed a fine time.
-he dance was held in the William Kng Field House which was cleverly end beautifully decorated by Mr. LJnsford and the Hop Committee.

in serving refreshments.
As I said, everyone had a wonder-
ful time and enjoyed the evening's festivities. W e are all looking for- ward to next year when we will win our homecoming game and have an- other fine dance.

Our choir plays a more important part in our campus life than we real- ize. Of course, they sing at all the daily and Sunday services here, but we sometimes forget that they· are essential in guiding the congrega-

VES was founded by the Reverend Robert Carter Jett, D.D., and opened for its first session in Sep- tember 1916.
The first commencement was held in the June of 1917, and the first graduate was Mr. Lucien Abbot.
In the fall of 1919 the Langhorne • Memorial Chapel and the W est Dorm were opened.
In the spring of 1920, Dr. Jett re- signed his position as Rector of VES to become the Bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, and the Reverend William Gibson Pendleton became the sec- ond Rector of the school.
I n t h e f a l l o f 1 9 2 0 , M r . J . K. Banks joined the ranks of the mas- ters and has taught here up to the present time. Also in 1920 the Barks- dale Memorial Gym, commonly called the "Little Gym," was opened.
In September, 1921, Mr. J. W. Gannaway joined the faculty and has remained here to the present day•.
Dr. Pendleton resigned in 1928 and was succeeded by the Rev. Oscar de Wolf Randolph, D.D.
The year 1940 was a red letter year in football for in that year EHS was defeated for the first time.
The 1940 Victory was followed by two more in a row in 1941 and 1942 but after that EHS has dominated

Dr. Randolph resigned in 1943 and upon his resignation, the Board of Trustees changed the title of the ad- ministrative officer of the School from Rector to Headmaster. Dr. George L. Barton, Jr. was elected to this position.
In the year of 1949 the William King Field House or the "New Gym" was opened.
Dr. Barton retired at the close of the 1956-1957 session and was suc- ceeded by the Reverend Mr. Rodger Atkinson Walke, Jr.
