HOTELLING WINS
Our cross country team has done exceedingly well this year, as it did as+ year. One member of the team, Jo-es Maynard Hotelling, of Chapel H' N. C., has not only won every roce he has run but has set a record
on every course, except two.
He won the Invitational Cross
Country Meet held at Wake Forest College over a field of 82 contest- onts ond last Saturday won first place o' ~andolph-Macon Academy.
Unfortunately. he is a Senior.
MISS ELIZABETH ANDREWS

929 called her, passed away on September 24. She had lived in Rich- "'ond at the Protestant Episcopal Home for several years. Boys of that era will have many memories of her

MRS. MYRTLE BATES
Old boys who used to gather in the Dietitian's office after meals will be sorry to know that Mrs. Bates died suddenly on November 2 1n Salem, Virginia.
She was Dietitian from 1948 to 1962 and most of V. E. S. called her,
in those days, "Ma."
Mrs. Bates was born October I0, 1892, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. John T. Adams. She attended A verett College in Danville, Virginia. She worked for Old Dominion Candy Company and Sweet Briar College
before coming to V. E. S.
Mrs. Bates had many friend s wherever she lived and especially among the faculty and boys of V. E. S.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hal Johnston, who lived on the campus while Hal was a member of the faculty. Also surviving are: two sisters, Mrs. E. L. Bates and Mrs.
John Anderson, of Brookneal and a brother, Kent Adams, of Rustburg, and three grandchildren.
DEYERLE TROPHY
Every year, at Homecoming, a trophy is presented by Oscar M. Deyerle, Jr., (V. E. S. 1926) in honor of his brother, Thomas D. Deyerle, (V. E. S. 1941) who was killed in the Second World War. The recipient is selected by a competent committee
who attend the game.
This year the winner was Robert
Crenshaw W atts, Ill, of Lynchburg, a Senior.
The presentation was made by Joseph H. Hoge (V. E. S. 1926) of Bluefield, W. Va., who was a friend of Oscar and Tom.
The announcement was well re- ceived during the intermission at the dance in King Memorial Field House.
HONOR TO JACK HUDNALL
On October 29, at Boy's Home in Covington, Va., a new infirmary was dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of Dr. B. Ryland Hudnall and his son Dr. Harry G. Hudnall (V. E. S. 1924). The dedication ser- vice was conducted by The Rt. Rev. William H. Marmion, Bishop of the Diocese of Southwest Virginia. Gov- ernor Harrison made the chief ad-
dress. Both of these doctors had ~erved t h e i n s t i t u t i o n d u r i n g t h e i r years of practice. Jack died Febru- ary 20, 1959. His so n Bert is a member of the V. E. S. Faculty.
Besides the family, Bishop George Gunn (V. E. S. 1923), Bertrand Hud- nall (V. E. S. 1921). the Rev. Wilfred Roach (V. E. S. 1935), Lorenzo and Mary Brightbill (V. E. S. 1923) at- tended the service.
