We ~~d much to be grateful for + Homecoming: beautiful weather, ~ good though tied football game, wn,ing cross country team, ond • c b ggest gathering of people in

Tho week after Homecoming was ddened by tho passing of two old ""ds. Mrs. Myrtle Bates died only e day after spending what she sa id ~s a wonderful weekend here a t '"C School. in tuition, we are doing virtually the e ntire job on the $2,00()-.of which this year just under $200 is going to support the debt contracted to build a better school for today's boys.
I see many blessings in the present and much hope for the future. We see our old boys come back in their student sons-about twenty-five this year. And the enthusiasm and sup- port of all the parents is really heart- ening. But frankly, the alumni as a body have not yet learned to sup- port their school as all the great schools in this country are supported. W e cannot boast of alumni partici- pation in the so-needful fund drives of '60 and '64. We can be grateful for the hard work and generosity of a small minority and we can say,
'One day you will all be proud to call this your school."

V. E. S. DIRECTORY
A copy of the first V. E. S. Alumni Directory was recently mailed to every alumnus whose address we knew. Also, copies went t o some whose addresses we thought we knew and about sixty-five came back with new and correct addresses for which we are very thankful. If any one of the alumni did not get one and would like to have one, please send us your correct address and we will be glad to mail it. Please look over the list and give us any address that you may know. It will help a lot. Those in the alumni office would appreciate your comments.

join us in this memorial.
Mr. Lamar, whose ashes
a r e in- terred in the Lamar Garden he so sensitively conceived, asked that any contribution in his memory be sent to the Lamar Fund "for the further
beautifying of the grounds."
Mr. Lamar long outlived his three score and ten, but I still wish he could-or hope he can-watch V. E. S. in the coming years. With the 50th session next year the School will be only beginning to come of age, and one day we shall look back from a position of real distinction and marvel at the early struggles, at the same time that we render thanks for the early help and encourage-
ment.
Today we have more buildings,
boys, and masters than ever before. But I can name schools with twice the staff for the some number of students. Naturally, even if our men are working harder, those other schools in this country are supported. both ·n and out of the classroom.
The richer program will come, as the facilities for it have begun to come. The School will one day be free of debt and know an endowment that will enable us to compete any- where for teaching talent and offer five times the scholarship aid we now can.
Speaking as objectively as I can, I must say it is remarkable just how much we are doing at this point in ou r history. Where other schools can spend up to $4,000 for every $2,000
