((... The Best Senior Class In Forty-Eight Years!"
Letter to the Editor
Dear Mr. Editor:
In accordance with your article in "Carper's Cubbyhole" in the May, 1964 edition of the Meteor, I have some very deep interests which, I
think, should be brought out at this time.
As you have hinted, school spirit can play a very essential part in the overall team desire and effort dur- ing a game. Have you considered, though, the amount of overall school morale which has been lost through the continual defeat of our athletic teams? I contend, without taking away the credit which our soccer, cross country, and track teams de- serve, that when we can have a win- ning season in more sports, the qeneral school morale will be higher. This does not pertain only to the afternoons of a contest, but every school day throughout the year.
Is V.E.S. not capable of having a successful team? In your article you brought out the fact that we have only 174 boys to choose from, and that we play in a league which is be- yond us in athletic excellence. I feel that a drive should be started to shake up our alumni and let them show interest in our athletics. In all the schools which we dream V.E.S. could some day outclass physically, there is an olumni fund which pro- vides for equipment and other needs.
Did you realize that three of our most importont coaches are leaving, which places voconcies in five major sports? Now new cooches will have to begin coping with the same prob- lems these men hove fought during their stoy here.
What benefits ore there from being o storter on one of our teoms? You certainly don't ploy for personal glory, recognition os a V-Ciub mem- ber, or personal occomplisment, but for the glory of the school. Here is the essence of the whole problem! As long as there is desire to win because of the glory which will be brought to the school, we have everything to fight for and in the future we will have winning teams.
The boys at V.E.S. are undoubted- ly great guys in every respect, and I think that they have the desire, ability, and team spirit to have a team that they could be proud of.
The low feeling now could b e raised by someone besides ourselves, showing that they care enough to help us achieve our goals.
--Julian Fenner.
All of us can only too well remem- ber that month so long ago when the Senicr class of '64 pledqed itself "to lead if you will follow." It was an exhilarating feeling for a few, and a feeling of great pride for many.
Now it's over; the forty-eighth year has drawn to a close.
But as surely as the sun sets, it will rise again. We can all look forward to the Senior class of '65 as that
'new day."
From the Seniors of '65 come able c:nd competent leaders in the form of counselors, class officers, etc., who will support the people they represent to the best of their ability. As some of us have seen, however, these fine leaders will drive themselves into the ground with no favorable results until the rest of the Senior class decides that it is time to act! How long will Senior classes sit idly by while THElR school goes down the drain? Your leaders must be helped and sup- ported as much as possible!
The year you are about to face will be one of hard going ... it will
TURNER MEMORIAL
Mrs. Cile Turner, prominent Lynchburg citizen ond a long- time friend of V.E.S., has given the schcol several flowering Crab- apple trees in memory of her son, Lawson Turner. Mr. Turner was never a student here, but his son, Lawson Turner, Ill, is a member of the class of 1965. These trees will doubtless grace the campus for muny years. The Meteor joins in groteful thanks to Mrs. Turner for this generous gift and thoughtful tribute to her son.
be no picnic. You will be subiect at all times to the criticisms of both faculty a n d students. You will receive your notices of shortcomings
as a body, seldom as individuals.
To avoid this, you must do what many of your predecessors failed to do ... you must grow up.
You can lead the boys here wherever you wish, good or bad; You are at the controls, and what you do no one can stop! You have an un- speakable amount of power at your fingertips! Your joint effort will could make this place into one unparalleled in the history of similar institutions.
Therefore, support your leaders! Tal:e the LEAD in school affairs! Be 1he best senior class in forty-nine years! You could remove the unrest that exists here today! You could breathe life into things that the "boys upstairs" thought could never be revived! Remember your leaders will fail you only if you fail them.
You're up next . .. knock a home run!
Campus beautified by several of these trees.
