Coinciding with the current stress on extra-curricular activities, three
members of the junior class are plan- ning the construction of a laser. Mar-

JOHN HETRICK
John "Pitchfork Ben" Hetrick hails
from South Carolina, and, as is the case for many citizens of that state, the only way to describe him is to say he is completely and devoutly South-
ern.
Although he first came to VES as a freshman, John did not return until his junior year, becoming the only student in the school's history to have been a new boy twice. Since he has
re-established himself, John has been an active memher of the student body, especially in sports, \vhere his successful membership on the Varsity

One of the basic problems facing young people today is that of being "ac-
cepted." In a small community such as VES, this problem can be especially
predominant. People here are so closely knit together that "acceptance" can
become greatly over-emphasized among students. If one is left out of an ex-
tra-curricular activity, the V-Club, for example, he may become quite frustrated with himself and with others.
Perhaps a solution to this is for one to volunteer his services in school ac- tivities, such as the art class, the school publications or to one of the organized clubs. By doing this, one is rewarded by personal satisfaction and self-respect,
and one would feel also as though he were more a part of the school.
In some schools it is found that in almost every group or club, there is
generally the same group of boys. However, at VES there is a chance for every- one to participate. No matter what grade one is in, there is some extra-curricu-
lar activity in which he can take part.
A major benefit of this would be greater unity among individuals and between individuals and masters. However, this unity can not be obtained unless everyone tries his best to find an area in which he can participate.
