Much fanfare has been ac- corded Big Brother and the Holding Company in the last months, all on account of lead singer Janis Joplin. Their first Columbia album, Cheap Thrills
is a basic disappointment, but not by lack of support from
Janis. She is a human wildcat screeching, bellowing, and hoi~ lering her raw voice to distrac-
tion. But the four male mem- bers of the group offer her very little musical support; at times they seem to be playing against her. Nonetheless certain tracks cannot help but come off
strong. "I Need a Man to Love," "Piece of My Heart," and "Turtle Blues" all make it with Joplin flair. Cheap Thrills is not an album to enjoy but rather to appreciate and ac- cepting it all depends on your reaction to the prodigy that is
Janis Joplin.
Crown of Creation is Jeffer-
son Airplane's best album. It is the most diversified and cre- ative package the group has ever prcduced. The ice-cold
voice of leadsinger Grace Slick is in finest form with "Lather" and "Greasy Heart." She and
her five male counterparts have penned extremely provocative lyrics and the album's success

In a day when rock is becom- ing more complex, The Byrds turn back to their original roots. The result is a Nashville-
