THE METEOR

Two of the most recent developments in the athletic li~e of the school have a subtle affinity which should be pointed out and encouraged. Bobby Richard- son, an ex-Yankee baseball player and present representative of the Fellow- ship of Christian Athletes, paid a surprise visit last week; and only a few days
earlier the Monogram Club began a long-range plan to establish a constitution. Bobby Richardson, who some avid baseball fans may remember as having won the 1962 World Series by fielding a hard-hit line drive, told of a few stand-out experiences in baseball; but his main objEctive was to stress the role of the Christian athlete. Although the term ·christian' athlete may have sticky connotations, it also deals with the everyday sportsman and his attitude to- ward competition. The person v;ho can refrain frotn anger and vile words in
a sports event is showing one side of a ·christian' athlete.
One may ask himself how being a good sport may tie in with the estab-
lishing of a constitution? There is quite a simple explanation. One good sport does not compose a .team, and one person cannot establish a constitution.
Randy Longworth's outstanding court ability is not due to an all-out effort to be better than others, but rather to the poise and control he displays. Gordon Whitehead's first draft of the V-Club's constitution was not done for acclaim, but it was done in the interest of others and out of a heart-felt desire to see the club prosper.
I think VES has its share of responsible ·christian' athletes; and the num- ber will rise.

Soccer: Winless After Four
The VES Booters, hoping to better their last year's record, began the sea-
hard time with ball control. Although
they recovered somewhat in the fourth quarter when a single goal was scored
by Mosby Vogler, time proved a fac-
tor and prevented the Bishops from Stud
son against a strong Collegiate team.
Collegiate jumped off to an early lead
scoring in the first quarter on a direct
kick by Andre Morretti. VES, held coming bac:k further. scoreless in the first half came back
in the third on a shot by center half- back Clay Ferebee, but the goal went for naught when Collegiate again went into the lead on another direct
kick by Morretti, ending the game 2-1 in favor of Collegiate. The next day the Bishops faced Father Judge, and, although VES controlled much of the game, the team failed to score
until very late in the fourth quarter when co-captain Mosby Vogler fired one past the defending goalie. This tally was short of overcoming the 2-0 lead held by Father Judge and the
second game ended 2-1.
In the first game of this semester,
the Bishops ran into a stone wall against the No. 1 rated Fork Union team and were smothered under a barage of opposing goals. The game ended 4-0 Fork Union.
Last Saturday the Bishops enter- tained the Tigers of Woodberry Forest and were beaten 3-1. With muddy and very slick conditions, VES had a
