Senior Aide
by Larry Jones
In response to the findings of
the summer planning committee, a Senior Aid Program has been established here at VES. The committee felt there was a need
for increased supervision of the dorms to ensure a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere during and after Study Hall. The Senior aid program is an option open to
all boarding Seniors and Post Graduates. Those who take part in this program will be sharing extra duties with the counselors
and duty masters.
The responsibilities which the counselor aides must live up to while on duty are making sure a "study" atmosphere prevails on
dorm during study hall and making sure that students get to
bed at the proper time. Assist- ants will also be required to
serve with a duty team on at least one weekend, and be willing to fill in when necessary. Senior Aides might also be called apon
to sit in on a class when a teacher or counselor is unable to
do so.
While not on duty, senior aides will be expected to make sure that a good school atmosphere is generally maintained. In ex-
change for fulfilling these re- sponsibilities, Counselor Aides will be entitled to a "package" of
privileges. Seniors who have passing grades in all their courses will be allowed to have Day Study Out in their rooms, or
in Randolph Lounge. Aides may also eat dinner in town on weekend nights including Sun- day if they obtain permission from the Duty Master. On Sun-
day nights, they must return by 7:00 p.m. Seniors will be allowed to 'wear blue jeans and tennis shoes into town and are entitled to one extra weekend leave per
year.
If, in the opinion of the teachers or counselor body, a Senior Aid has not lived up to his responsibilities, that Senior Aid will be given a warning. If this warning does not bring about a
change in his behavior, his privi- leges .may be suspended for six weel_l:s, and if this is unsuccesllful, then a permanent revOcation of
privileges may result.
As shown by the nearly un-
animous participation, the Senior Class feels that the Counselor Aid Program is an important step towards greater Senior involvement in school life, as well as an establishment of substan-
tail Senior privileges. The real success or failure of the program lies in the hands of the Senior Class, and in the amount of effort
they are willing to put into it. ·The Senior Aid Program is a
worthwhile and welcome addi- tion to the school.

Tax Measure
Defeated
by Kerke Johnson
As many of us have heard
recently, the city of Lynchburg was seriously considering levy- ing a service charge on tlie five private educational institutions
in the city. The five schools were: VES, Lynchburg College, Ran- dolph-Macon Woman's College, Seven Hills School and Virginia
College.
The service charge, if insti-
tuted, would be a tax placed on faculty housing owned by the schools. VES, owning an esti- mated $849,050 of such housing, would have to pay $5,264 per
year in tax. VES, possesses more of this type property than any of the other four institutions and is
followed by Lynchburg College
