Foreign Language
Mrs. Hackett goes over an assignment with her eighth grade Latin class.
The study of foreign languages at V.E.S. is regarded as one of the most important areas of the curriculum. Through the study of another culture, it is felt that one grows to appreciate not only the people of other coun- tries; but equally important, he also learns to place greater value on his own language. Mr. Phillip Garmey both chairs the department and instructs French. In addition, Mssrs. Brown, Culbertson, and Sullivan teach German, French and Spanish respectively. Mrs. Hack- ett and Mr. Meador teach Latin. In addition to provid- ing the students with the four basic skills of reading, writng, speaking and listening in the classroom, the faculty enc-ourages extra curricular activities that foster one's understanding of the language and culture: inter- action with native speakers in Lynchburg is encour- aged; a foreign film series was begun this year at V.E.S.; Mr. Meador accompanied students on a trip to Italy last spring and Mr. Brown took a small group of German 3 students to West Germany and Austria last summer. Hopes for the future include such activities as &V.E.S. foreign language festival and greater participation in the language clubs.
What kind of films is Mr. Sullivan showing in SpanĀ· ish?
John Gibbs translates correctly in Latin with the help of Mr. Meador.
