The English Department consists of Messrs. Jim Hopkins, Mark Armstrong, George Berry, Bruce McCormick, John Foster, James Hight, David Brown, Les Boney, Bob Bowden, and Mrs. Martha Sawyer. Mr. Hopkins, Chairman of the department, has set goals for students in all grades. Above all, the purpose is to make the students aware of the princi- ples and tactics used in good writing. English plays an inte- gral role in the curriculum at Virginia Episcopal School. The courses taught at the eleventh and twelfth grades are inte- grated into the Core Program, coordinated with the History Department. Practice in grammar and composition aid the student in learning to state his thoughts clearly and creative- ly; the study of literature exposes the student to the world of ideas and expression. Skills learned at VES represent the tools necessary for good communication throughout life.
