The Varsity Tennis team opened its spring campaign with a disappointing 8-1 defeat to a highly talented Collegiate team.
Top-ranked Scott Robertson was victorious in his match winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Most of the other matches were close, but Colle-
giate was simply too overpower- m• g.
The following match was an easy 6-8 victory over FUMA and all but one singles won. In the doubles, Chris (jardner and Scott
Robertson, ranked number one defeated the FUMA duo 10-6. '
Coach John Foster has a
youthful but experienced squad
made up of one senior six •••
• JUruors, one sophomore and one seventh grader. The top six
players are Robertson, Gardner Billy Thomas, T. 0. Williams: Ben Keys and Sammy Korshan. Coach Foster notes that the
competition in Prep League is extremely tough, especially the teams from Richmond, but feels that his team can have a success-
ful season if they play to their potential.

The 1983 Spring Track team
has proven to be a powerful opponent, possessing a wide range of talents and abilities. Although losing their first meet at Rustburg, the team showed large amounts of promise, and Coach Arnold noted that the field events did particularly well.
Charlie Crowder took first in both the pole vault, soaring as high as 9'6"; and the high jump, clearing 5'10". Eric Rutherford also showed splendid form in the vault, coming in second with a
career best of 9'. This was fol- l o w e d b y G i b b s , wh~
took second in the high jump and second also in the triple jump. Randy Stephens took first in
the shot-put with a career best of 42'9", followed by David Bash- am's excellent throw of 37 feet.
In the running events, senior captain Marshall Hairston made a clean sweep of first in both the
high and intermediate hurdles, finishing the intermedistes with one of the most spectacular swan dives in VES history. Other standouts were Chuck Frank, Gene Grant, Mike Hussion and Tommy Hudson.
The team is involved in four tri-meets and is aiming to do well in the Prep League Meet at Woodbery and the State Meet. Several Bishops, namely Mar- shall Hariston, Randy Stephens, Charlie Crowder and David Ba- sham, will contend for high honors in both of these meets.

The VES Golf Team has begun
its season and according to Coach McCormick, they have high hopes for the Prep League title. They are returning four letter- men from last year, "Big" Dave Allen, Jay "the Sleeze" Bram-
mer, John "Ace" Bond, and Lee "Killer" Wells. Other returning players are Andrew Morgan and Chris ''Tex" Jones.
The Golf Team has had one match this season so far, and it was a heartbreaker. The Bishops
lost to Woodberry Forest by one stroke. The Medalists for the match were Jay Brammer and David ADen. Lee Wells also m•de a good showing. Getting off
to a slow start has had a revene effect because it has the team more determined to play harder.
Four members of the Golf Team participated in a Cancer Tournament on April 17th and finished fourth in a field that consisted of local merchants and
business firms in the Lynchburg area. Coach McCormick says that his golf team has begun playing better and is impressed with the long hitters on the team.
In order for the team to win the Prep League title they must beat St. Christopher's and Blue Ridge. The golfers seem quite excited about the prospect of a possible championship. The fifth
and sixth position will play an important role in their success. The top contenders for these positions are Bo Dunn, Andrew Morgan and John Moulton.
We wish the Bishops the best of luck in their season and hope that they can win a Prep League Championship.
