The Varsity Lacrosse team is off to a fair start this season. The Bishops have won one game and lost two in the first weeks of play. The team bas a great deal of talent and should improve as the season progresses.
In the first game against Lexington Lacrosse Club, the Bishops emerged with an 11-6 victory. Leading the scoring for the Bishops were Jim Hill with 4 goals and Kevin Merritt with 2 goals, 4 assists. Other goals were turned in by: Ashby Watts, Mike McCabe, Dill Battle, Bailey An- derson, and Billy Hunter. Goalie Tommy Battle had 8 saves while Jay Saunders, Parker Hale, and Bill Nelson played well on de- fense.
The Bishops' second game was against last year's state champi- ons, St. Anne's-Belfield. The Bishops played a superb game losing by one goal, 7-6. The defense played exceptionally
well holding the High School All- American from St. Anne's to only two goals. Scoring for the Bish- ops were Jim Hill and Kevin Merritt with 4 goals, 1 assist and 2 goals, 2 assists respectively. The Bishops worked well as a team and were ahead for most of the game.
The third game was against a tough team: Norfolk Academy. After traveling four hours to play the game, the Bishops had a rough start causing them to fall behind by a few goals. The Bishops mounted a comeback in
the second period but with Norfolk scoring a few more goals, the Bishops lost 8-2. Scoring for the Bishops were Ashby Watts with 1 goal and Kevin Merritt with 1 goal, one assist.
The Varsity stickmen should prove to be competitive through- out the rest of the season. They are hoping to do well enough to be invited to the state tourna- ment which is composed of the top eight teams.

The commencement of the Varsity Baseball season is filled with optimism. Despite the per- manent absence of Mike Toney
and Chris Horton. two of the best
players on the team, the Varsity
sluggers field a highly competi-
tive squad and are considered to
be one of the best teams in the
Prep League. Captained by Skip- er Hines, Wade Morton, and
Allan Morton and coached by Max Meador and Rock Lee, the team has an overabundance of leadership.
Although two games have been postponed due to rain, the Bishops have won thre gam a,
including an exhibition victory. That win was over Suffi ld Academy (Connecticut) with a
~eore of 4-3.
The Bishops opened up their regular season in strong fashion by defeating Blue Ridge 11-5. Fireballer Chris Horton threw very well and boggled his oppo-
nents with a variety of curve balls, fastballs and sliders. It was a true all-round effort and every- one in the starting line-up collect- ed at least one hit. After a slow
start, they erupted for nine un- answered runs in the third inning, putting the game out 'of reach for the Barons.
The next game was a disap-

turned in fine performances. In their next game, VES thrashed Holy Cross 11-4 in a
game that featured several su- perb individual performances: Senior David Liggett it safely to base in each of his five at-bats and W alter Jones pitched splendidly. Jones impressed the crowd with a facny pick-off of a Holy Cross base runner.
Claude Whitehead was equally impressive, collecting two
lice bunts and Skipper Hin was instrumental in leading th de- fense.
