How NOT to Dress for Dinner
by Walt Coles
Few of you may have been wondering just what exactly it is that the group of students who meet on Sunday and Thursday nights in Jett 116 are doing. Well, they are a bold new breed of future political leaders. They...are the V.E.S. delegates of the Model Organization of American States.
Under the tutelage of faculty advisor Tommy Battle, they plot to forever change the course of world history. Seniors Arie Richards and Walt Coles are mere figureheads of the group with their respective titles of Head Delegate and Secretary. The real power core lies in the hands of juniors, John Webb and David " Shades" Blocker. Together these two have already laid the groundwork to com- pletely unify the western hemisphere, solve the world drug problem, assassinate Sad- dam Hussien, a nd save all the
rainforests. Supporting Webb and "Shades" is an encore of others juniors such as Charlie Kerr, Sally Thomas, Bridge Lit- tleton, and Henry Heil. Also representing the senior class are Burke Morton, Allison Fuller, and V.E.S.'s first female acolyte - Megan Goshorn. The youngest member of the group, freshmore Ashley Monohan, has demonstrated her importance through her ability to debate complex global issues.
This group of highly indepen- dent, young individuals has been diligently preparing for the highlight event of the M.O.A.S. elective course, the Model Assembly, held in Washington D.C. on November 15-18, 1990.
The V .E.S. delegation will represent the Caribbean country Haiti at the assembly. This re- quires that all the V .E.S. students have an in-depth work- ing knowledge of Haiti's culture and political policies. The assembly comprises delegations from 32 schools around the coun- try. Delegates from all these schools will each meet in one of five different committees to debate specific agenda topics and pass approved resolutions. The focus of the Model O.A.S. is to serve as a learning ex- perience for everyone involved. It provides an enlightening look at Washington bureaucracy as well as the views and problems of South America and the Carib- bean. The V.E.S. delegation will be staying in a hotel near Georgetown and time permit- ting there will be a chance for delegates to see and experience the other tourist attractions of our nation's capital.
Retired M.O.A.S. superstar Shattuck Groome predicts that this will be one of V.E .S.'s most successful years ever . Shattuck is positive with Arie Richards as Head Delegate, V.E .S. will easi- ly stand out among the other delegations in Washington.
