COMMUNITY AND CLUBS
Serving Others
Service projects deepen students’ awareness of themselves and others. Participation in the Lower School begins with canned food and toy drives and visits to senior centers and shelters. Upper School boys complete at least sixty hours of service. The school encourages students to undertake a service project that enriches their understanding of themselves and others through direct contact with people in the Washington, D.C., area. Through precept and example, students learn that good character comes from kindness, from an open heart and mind.
Grilled Cheese, Government, and the GSA
From thought-provoking substance to light-hearted fun, clubs complement and cultivate a boy’s personal interests. More than thirty student-led and faculty-sponsored clubs — including the Star Wars Club, the Cultural Awareness Organization, the Fed Challenge, Gardening Club, the Robotics Club, and the St. Albans News — appeal to the wide- ranging interests of boys of all ages. St. Albans and National Cathedral School students in the Government Club match wits debating the issues of the day. The GSA fosters conversation about gender, sexuality, and inclusivity. Other clubs have a less serious bent: members of the Grilled Cheese Club make
and eat sandwiches, the Comedy Club practices stand-up routines, and the BEEF Club — the student-run booster club — loudly encourages enthusiastic turnout at athletic and other events.
“Rather than understanding service as a relationship in which one gives and another receives, students
learn that service, at its core, is about coming to know and appreciate and spend time with individuals we might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.”
