In Gratitude
fABIAN BACHRACH
MR.
PHILIP EDWARD BURNHAM
Rare is the teacher whose outlook on life and attitude towards teaching reflect a total
concern for the learning process of the student. Mr. Burnham is such a teacher. During his
many years here whether as faculty advisor, classroom teacher, or Head of the English
Department, he has always displayed a real interest an d joy in helping th e student grasp
not only the secrets of the English language , bu t the values an d ideas men have exp ressed
through English as we ll. His years as Dean of the Faculty of the Advanced Studies
Program and as CILief Reader for the Co llege Board English Compositi on Test reflect
clearly his own considerable talent for understanding the student's approach to English
and e timating any individual's capacity and aptitude for a knowledge of the English
language. It is in the increasing of this ca paci ty and aptitude tha t Mr. Burnham exce ls, fo r
he makes not only English , but also the world around us inte resting with his friendly and
witty optimist's viewpoint towards life and its problems, in the realm of English and
beyond. All who have had the good fortune to be associated with Mr. Burnham in the
classroom or outside of it have come away riche r from the experience. The school, an d
especially this year's Sixth Form, is grateful for the real interest he has shown in the boys
at S t. Paul's.
