On the Diamond
Spring is almost here: just around the corner is caterpillar kill- in' season. alias baseball time; Long John has already waYed his big hands over the infield: and nothing
remains hut caterpillars. good dust. and a gang of hopefuls who are endeayoring to return the \'ES baseball team into the win column.
Four regulars are returning from last year's team. By an odd coin- cidence these four. Billy Long. " i \ 1 " \ V i l l i a m s , l~ohhie L e e a n d Edgar Hetty, are all North Caro- linians and formed the 2-3-4-5 hat- ting combination during the past season.
The hull session athletes who win games hcfore they are played haYc much speculation to work on ac- cording to Coach Bell. lwcause ver)
few players have a position sewed up..\t first base. Lefty Jim Ballou. Jack Sprague. and Perrin Gower are battling it out. Either Ballou or Sprague will play somewhere in the outfield it is believed.
,\t second base. throne of the caterpillar killers. sits l3illy Long. llowever. Long may 1110\'e to short- stop to give l\1ike Coleman a chance at the kevstone sack. Gordon }.[on- cure and-Jack Parrott are also in on the shortstop deal. l\Ioncure will probably ,ec service on the mound
or possibly in the outfield.
,\t third last year's captain. " ,\1''
\ \ 'illiams. will no doubt be a starter. It's said that ''Lil Al's" gloYe is hung in a cocoanut tree somewhere in Raleigh. and he has yet to make his appearance on the diamond. for fear that (according to his friends) he mav sting his hands in the cold \ ' i r g i J { i a a i r . ~like C o l e m a n i s around to fill in if \\'illiams' glove
doesn't fall down. Outfield
Tn the outfield. beside the afore- mentioned infielders who expect to play outfield, also arc "Cookie" .\rmistead. \\'barton Gaul. Val Stieglitz. l31ackie TreYathan. Sears ITarris, Bruce "Bugle" Ilorne and Hobbie Lee. There's a rumor that "HiAe ,\rm" Pritchard is heading
for the baseball field and that A Boyd will probably try the outfield. The batten· combination this year will most lik~ly be the same as-last year with "Rock" Lee pitching and ''The'' Edgar Betty behind the mask. ~foncure will ha\'e his share
of work on the mmmd. no doubt, but when these two give out there just "ain't no more o' nothin !''
The manager~ and assistant man- agers have issued a solemn warning that any one who is frightened b) strange noises should stay awa)
from the baseball field for the next few weeks. Two distincth· different dialects arc spoken, one on the right of second base and one on the left. The two groups arc headed by John TTenry Parrott, the Bath County
(\'a.) version of "Step'n Fetchit" and \Villiam Gray Long. the ''Garysburg (N. C.) Express." Al- so to he watched is the ease and grace with which Parrott slides in- to second base. This vear the G. 1\ . .\. has voted him ~ome sliding pads in appreciation of his noble hut blood stained attempt:; of last year.

This group of four is headed by
Captain Dave Rianhard. who will run the mile and the half-mile. The others are Tuck ~Iaddux, AI \\'illiams. and Jesse \\'aller. Gra- ham Koch's entering the armed forces has \\eakened the team somewhat in the field events. but :\fr. ~Tilton is doing his best to prepare a replaccment.
