Football this yeor will be head and
shoulders above what it was during the war years. There will be power- houses all over the country.
Prep Schools: Woodberry will be weaker than last year but should be t}Ae strongest of the Virginia schools. VES will be greatly improved, EHS about the same, and St. Christo- pher's somewhat weaker than in pre- vious years. Staunton M. A. will be tops in the military schools.
East: 46 will be just like the last two years with Army leading the pack, followed closely by Penn, Navy and Cornell.
Midwest: Notre Dame wi!l be the team to beat, but watch for Illinois, Michigan and Oklahoma A. & M.
Far West: U. C. L. A., Southern California, Oregon and Oregon State will fight it out for the Rose Bowl bid.
Southwest: It looks as if Texas will be the top team. Texas Tech will rule the smaller schools.
South: In the deep South it will be between Alabama and Georgia with L. S. U. and Tennessee the dark horses. Duke, UNC, and William & Mary will rule the Southern Confer- ence.

Varsity Prospects
The V. E. S. Varsity football squad has started heavy practice in prep- aration for the opening game with Miller School on October 4th.
About 35 hopefuls have been working out daily under Head Coach Barnum and his two assistants, Line Coach Bailey and Backfield Coach Wyatt.
Among the candidates are nine lettermen from last year's team and a number of veterans, including Tuck Maddux, who was qua rterback for the Bishops in 1943- 1944, before joining the navy.
The returning lettermen are Capt. Ballou, Gower, P., Lewis, G., Kemper, Allen, Hyre, Gormly, Maddux, W., and Cornett.
The outlook for this year's eleven is much brighter than that of last year's injury-riddled squad, which won only one game.
The backfield for the Garnet and White will include Captain Ballou at tailback, Tuck Maddux a t blocking back, Allen at wingback, and Gower and Hyre alternating at fullback. Lewis, G., Nut+, R., and Lewis, C ., will also see plenty of action handling the ball.
This year's homecoming game will be with the Woodbury Forest Tigers on Johnson Memorial Field October 19th. Probably the toug hest oppo- nents on the Bishop's seven-game ~chedule w i l l b e S t . C h r i s t o p h e r ' s , Woodbury Forest, and Episcopal High School.

The probable starting positions for the members of the 130- lb. team are Marshall and Akers, Matt, ends; McClung and Wiggins, tackles; Murray, P., and Brooks, guards; Zander, center; Skinner, wingback; Mac l eod and Thompson, J., alternating, blocking back; Finch, fullback; and Bullington, tailback.
