Mexico's Music
By Charles G. Northrup
Nowhere in the world, I suppose, is
t h e r e a p e o p le a s m u s i c a l a s o u r southern neighbors, the people of Mexico. Their land is full of music. You can't go anywhere in the country without hearing some kind of music. It flows in their veins.
While they have their corridos- ballads that tell the story of the ad- ventures of heroes, love, and revolu- tions-and their boleros, fox trot, and jazz, they still hove o strong liking for American music. The world famous Mexico City Symphony is as fine a musical organization as there is any- where in the world.
The instrumental organizations that correspond to our popular bands are known os mariachis. They came from among strolling folk orchestras that traveled from village to village to play a t special fiestas. They usually consist of a guitar, guitarron (large gui~or), violin, and a tiny vibuelo, ja- ranas, ond small harp. Lately, though, the cornet hos been added. The num- ber of musicians varies from three to a dozen.
Mexican songs have undergone changes, but it is hoped that they shall continue to retain such essen- tially Mexican spirit os "Guadalaha- ra" and "Viva Mexico."
