Bedford Game
The Bishops opened the 1948 Basketball season by scoring a 46 to 31 victory over Bedford High Schoo. in Barksdale Gymnas um on January 17. After a ragged start the Bishops soon found themselves and were able
to overcome a 6-2 lead held by Bed- ford. Bob White connected from around the foul circle to make the count 8-2. Then baskets by Carty and Williams put V. E. S. out in front by I0 points. The Bishops kept ahead after that and held a half time lead of 24-12.
In the second ha!f Snead the cen- ter for Bedford found the range and was able to bring the Bedford five within 9 points of the Bishops be- fore the third quarter ended. In the fourth quarter baskets by Andrews, Thomos and White put the Bishops at a comfortable margin. The game ended at 46-31 for the Bishops.
Guard Charles Carty led Coach Gene Barnum's quintet with a total of 15 points and also wos outstanding in ball handling and shooting. Sneed and Coleman were the outstanding players for Bedford, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively.
H. M.A. Game
A fast-breaking Hargrave Military Academy basketball team jumped in- to a big lead in the second period and then went on to trim the Bishops 53-35 ot Barksdale gymnasium Janu- ary 21st.
The Bishops fell behind 4-0 in the opening minutes of play, but by mid- period had rallied and shot into an

8-6 lead which they he d almost to
the end of the first quarter when Har· grave led 12-8. The Hargrave five looped 21 Joints through the hoop in the secon period to rel:>ound into a halftime lead of 33-18. The Military five were in danger again although in the second half the Bishops played them on comparatively even terms.
Cobb of the visitors led all honors with 20 points, but Charlie Carty who was banished from the game with five personal fouls midway through the last quarter managed to toss in 16 of the home clubs points. Bob White who was second high scorer for V. E. S. with 9 points played a fine defensive game as well as did Grimes Thomas and Bill Jackson.
