The Screaming Wheels
(Continued from page 8)
he looked for the air line with his flashlight, but a sudden lurch made him drop it to the rushing highway beneath, and he was left in the dark.
Again he glanced at his instru- ments; air pressure: zero. As he took a switchback he heard the tires scream as if they would burst, and he smelled the burning rubber.
He took one hand off the bucking wheel and probed again into the hole. He found the air line riveted to the side of the cover over the clutch. It was broken just abaft of it; the break was clean enough to have been sawed.

He grabbed his hammer from the emergency box on the side of his seat.
"Now," he said, "I'll have to flat- ten this copper line in order to stop theleak. IfIdon'tsucceed,Iwon'tbe able to make Grave's End turn at the base of this infernal mountain. " The heat was terrific, but he managed to pound the air line flat; burning his hand till the blood oozed out.
Slowly the air pressure built up; twenty-five, forty, seventy-five, ninety pounds. When it reached one hun- dred twenty-five, he tried his brakes. He could feel them take hold. The speedometer registered only to sixty. The needle was on the stop. After a half-minute of braking it began to drop.
When it got down to forty, Joe breathed a sigh of intense relief.
"I've got to shift now even if I don't have a clutch or I'll burn out my brakes."
Now that the truck had slowed down, he thought he knew how to do it.
Carefully he put the transmission in neutral. Then with one foot on the brake he rammed the accelerator to the floor until the engine roared.
He nudged fourth with his shift. An instant clashing met his ears. He let up very slightly on the accelerator. The clashing diminished. When he thought he had the speed ratio just right, he rammed it into fourth and shut off the fuel. Instantly the com- pression of his huge power plant slowed him. He repeated the process until he was running in second.
Just in time. He was in the turn. It took all his strength to turn the wheel; the tires screamed and burned; but the truck, due to its great width, held fast.
As a hot and smoking Number Nine rolled into the Laboratory grounds, the manager came out to congratu- late its driver.
"Nicejob,Allen!"hesaid. "Iknew you'd make it."
"That's the longest hour I've ever spent," Joe replied weakly, looking at his watch.
