FOOTBALL
From the Side Lines
by Charles Carty
The Bishops this season have nine returning lettermen. The Garnet and White aggregation has a Imost enough lettermen to fill every slot on the team. W ebb Maddux, powerful three-year left guard veteran, is ex- pected to lead the Bishop spearhead. Stuart Harris, last year's hard charg- ing center will be back in his old position.BobWhite, roughand tough lineman is expected to be shift- ed to the backfield. White, an out- standing basketball player, should look good in the Bishop backfield. Monty White, guard from last year, is expected to improve as the season moves on. Buck Nutt, charging back
from last year, will be expected to carry the leather a great deal this year. Fred Ogden, one of the fastest backs at V. E. S., was injured early last season but he is back in tip top con- dition for this year. Charlie Lewis, hard driving tailback and two-year letterman, was injured in the first week of practice but is expected to be back in the line up before the sea- son is over. Ronald Marshall. aggres- ive end, injured last season in the Randolph-Macon tilt, will be doing more than his share for the Garnet and White eleven this year. Hal Jack- son, captain and brains of the Bishop eleven, will be a triple threat to every
V. E. S.- MILLER SCHOOL GAME team the Bishops meet. His accurate
passing and ability to run the ball will spell defeat for many of the teams that V. E. S. will play.
Coaches Johnston and Galliford have already put together a club that cleaned Miller School 37-0, and Har- grave Military Academy 13-6, but the big competition is yet to come. Woodberry Forest, E. H. S., and Saint Christopher's always give the Bishops a rough time. This season should tell a different story with the material, the coaches, and the will' to win.
Football Ups and Downs
by Charles Carty
Except for the first game ever
played in football competition, V. E. S. has been victorious each time over Miller School. In the first game, played in 1935, the V. E. S. eleven went down to defeat 12-0. Since then the Bishops have run the string of vic- tories to twelve in a row. The boys from Miller School have shown gal- lantry in facing a much heavier team than their own year after year.
The record with the greatest rival. Woodberry, is not so pleasing as the one with Miller School. V. E. S. has won six games and the Orange and Black has been the victor nineteen times. Two games have ended in ties. A bright spot in the series came in
1922 when the Garnet and White crushed the Tigers 51-7. In the same year R.-M. A. went down to defeat
107-9, at the hands of the Bishops. The series with Hargrave has been nip and tuck all the way. Of the nine games played V. E. S. has won four
and Hargrave, five.

Pre-Season Scrimmages
In an effort to strengthen the team, the Bishops scrimmaged Brookville High School in three recent games. The games showed an improvement on the team's passing and running attack. Captain Hal Jackson, triple- threat tailback, looked good slicing off several long gains, and he un- corked his passing arm for several long aerials. The receiving ends, Marshall, Haggard, and Finch were good. Bob White, blocking back, and W eb Maddux, guard, displayed their offensive ability by continually dis- rupting the plays of the opposing team. Coaches Johnston and Galli- ford substituted frequently in order to enable more men on the squad to have experience with another team. The Bishops outclassed Brookville in every contest by a sizable margin.
