In America it was, where the lan- guage of the English king is alleged- ly dominant.
I walked into a drugstore, and in the spoken of language, asked for:
"A package of Lucky Strikes, please. "
The clerk says something like this:
"Feed the man a deck of fortunate butts. "
Fearing the results of such an out- burst I lost no time in changing my order to a glass of water and a tooth- pick, knowing full well it would be im- possible to do other than to call a spade a spade this time. The man made a liar of my thoughts.
"Scratch! Contact! A vagabond 's martini and a short order of pine needles. "
I decide to join the party and change my order to:
"Slip me a sliver of liver from the river."
At such a simple request for fish the man grew quite indignant.
The next few words, though some- what slanderous, were in very plain English, and left little doubt as to the given name of a spade.
For a minute I thought the man had forgotten that be-bop was spok- en there, but, not so; for when I started to leave I was accompanied by:
"Slap the trap, sop."
