The Meteor
October, 1950
As this issue of The Meteor goes to press, we are all looking forward to Homecoming Day, when we hope that a large number of alumni will return to V. E. S. to see the game with W oodberry Forest and to share in the organization of a general alumni association. The untiring ef- forts of Mr. Gannaway, as our Act- ing Alumni Secret-ary, have already resulted in the formation of several local chapters of alumni in Baltimore, in Raleigh and in Lynchburg and we hope that Homecoming Day will see the organization of a substantial and continuing parent association.
We at the School are not entirely unselfish in our hopes, for we realize that a well-organized group of loyal alumni is one of the most valuable assets a school can possess. Through such alumni our School can become known in an ever widening area in a manner and to a degree that cannot be equaled by printed booklets and advertisements. W e hope that, as our alumni return to visit old haunts and to exchange stories of their pranks and prowess at V. E. S., they will also take note of the great im- provements recently made in our physical plant, that they will come to know something of us masters, and that they will realize that we are not simply ' doing business at the same old stand" but are striving to carry V. E. S. forward to ever new successes. In a rapidly chang- ing world it is not always easy to steer a course between the rocks of a severe conservatism and the quick- sands of radical change, to cling always to the proved worth and at the same time reach for the future's good; yet such must be and is our aim.
To our alumni, then, a cordial welcome. May you enjoy your visit and may you leave with a renewed affection for your School and an en- livened loyalty to its best interest.
