Defeat Number Two
Spotting Virginia Episcopal School seven points in the first quarter, Fish- burne Military School roared back with touchdowns in each of the three remaining periods to grab a 20- 14 decision from the Bishops.
However, the scrappy Bishops put up a stiff fight before succumbing to the size and power of the Cadets in ~he final quarter. ·
It was in this fourth period that Thompson intercepted one of Doug Von Noppen's passes and raced 27 yards for the touchdown which pro- vided F. M. S. with the victory.
The game played on J ohnson Field here today saw Van Noppen, V. E. S. candidate for all-State prep honors, almost lead his game but outclassed
teammates to an upset win over the favored Cadets.
V . E . S . s t r u c k e a r l y i n t h e firs~ quarter when the line burst through to block a Fishburne punt and Cap- tain John Thomas pounced on the boll. Van Noppen went 10 yards of the first play for the score. The stellar little quarterback then boosted the extra point to give the Bishops a sev- en point advantage.
On the first play of the second quarter, Ray Quillen took the ball on an end around play and went 51 yards for the Fishburne score. He al- so made good the placement and the count was tied. However, Austin's flat pass was grabbed from in front of the intended receiver by Duke Taliaferro and run 42 yards for the Bishops' second TD. Von Noppen again converted.

in favor of V. E. S., but Fishburne soon narrowed the gap to 14-13. In o series of five plays with George Madre showing the way, the Cadets scored as Austin went over from the two. The attempted conversion was blocked.
With time fast running out after Thompson 's intercepted pass touch- down, V. E. S. tried desperately to start a drive, but the Fishburne for- ward wall dug in and held until the whistle.

Basketball Pre-view
Try-outs for the 1950-51 V. E. S basketball teams will be calle::l in
few days. At least three Bishop team have had tentative schedules draw for them and keen competition is ex pected from those who wish to make any of these squads.
All boys in school are eligible tc play varsity ball, ability being thE only requirement. Those who wish tc ploy on the fifteen year o!d and unde team must not have reached the' sixteenth birthday before Decembe 4, 1950. Those who wish toJiay or the seventeen year old an unde team must not have reached the· eighteent h birthday before Decem ber 4, 1950. However, since the seventeen year old team is also ou Jayvee team, some older boys rna play in the interscholastic game which are not part of the Lynchburc City league competition.
This year's Varsity squad may be the surprise team in the state despite the loss of four of last year's starters. Jim Winston, George Smith, Jim Hunter, and Bill Stokes should prove to be an excellent nucleus arounc which to build a well-balanced ba club. T aliaferro, Peirson, Britt Thompson and the untested abilitie' of our new boys should provide the necessary second wind which migh1 lead to a State Championship.

Glancing at his watch he see's his time's almost up, but he must take one good look at "Ole" west dorm before he journeys back home. Peer- ing into 3rd west he sees "Chief" Lee who's returned to bless these 140 acres for a few more years.
More power to "YE" chief, who says, "I can take anything but Appo· mattox popcorn."
"Well, that's all for now," exclaims the old astrologer as he ho ils the 5 :40 rocket bound for all points north
