The Jayvees finished the season
with 2 losses, a tie, and a win. They tied the season opener with Loving- ston after losing two straight to Brookville and Amherst by 34-6 and 37-13 scores. They journeyed to Ap- pomattox and won 7-6. "Socks" Sib- ley and Gilmer were the outstanding
1
backs as G enn, Ruffin, Jones, and
Shaw Smith stood out in the line. For their win, the Bishops had to come from behind in the last quarter. Sib- ley scored on a 20-yard sprint through the middle of the line. In the last minutes Appomattox drove deep into Bishop territory but here the Bishops dug in and the game ended with the Bishops the victors.
_The 130-lb. team, beaten only by Mdler Park and once by Fort Hill, captured second place in the city l~ague football standings. The Baby B1shops, topped only by Lynchburg's "Mighty Mites," have finished their best season in four years with a 4-3
won and lost record. They have scored 2 wins over Fort Hill and Gug- genheimer each. Largely responsible for the Bishop victories was their line. Led by Jimmy and Blair Farinholt, Gibby Roe, and Jim Kester, the line ha_d d,i,fficulty in holding "The Mighty M1tes only. The running of Duna- vant and Braxton plus the passing of Milton Barber led the Bishop attack. After starting the season off with 2 losses they rebounded for 4 straight wins interrupted by I loss.
Miller Game
Charlottesville, Oct. 7 -
Episcopal School's football
scored a 20-6 triumph over Miller School in its season opener, but suf- fered the loss of three men with in- JUrieS.
Len Muse and Jim Winston, first string ends, were lost for the season and Captain John Thomas suffered an injured ankle.
Paced by the brilliant quarterback- ing of Doug Van Noppen the Bish-
ops jumped into the lead in the sec- ond period. Van Noppen climaxed a 70-yard march when he sliced off tackle for 20 yards and a touchdown. His attempted conversion was blocked.
After the halftime intermission Joe Lawson, 128-pou nd halfback from South Boston, took the ball on a hand- off and raced 56 yards for a Bishop
touchdown. Lawson went over tackle and reversed his field, picking up hi; blockers as he ran, and raced the d:s- tance.
V. E. S. fumbled and the Cadets recovered on the Bishop 25-yard line. Four straight offside penalties gave the ball to Miller on the two and after the V. E. S. forward wall had held for
three downs, Carl Cummings plunged over with the score. The conversion sailed wide of the uprights.
In the fourth quorter Van Noppen took off on o 35-yord run and Sonny Pierson sliced his way to the five be- fore Ray carried the boll over in two tries. Van Noppen converted for the second time and the scoring for the game was over.

In the first quarter, following the V. E. S. kick-off, Hargrave fumbled and George Locher pounced on the ball for the Bishops. Von Noppen picked up II yards around end, and then handed off to halfback Sonny Pierson who scompered through tackle for 13 yards and the Bishops first score. Late in the first half, Har- grave, led by fleet-footed halfbacks Abernathy and Davis, drove deep in· to V. E. S. territory, but never could push across a score.
Following the second half kickoff, after an exchange of punts, Lynch- burg's Chauncey Hutter picked up 16 yards on a reverse. Five plays netted I I yards and a first down, and then scatback Joe Lawson carried around end to the three-yard line where Horace Ray bucked over. The attempted conversion was low.
The final V. E. S. score, ofter the recovery of a Hargrove fumble, came of a "fluke" touchback play. Van Noppen carried 12 yards to the 22- yard line, where Nick Stieglitz car- ried to the goal. but fumbled in the end zone, the Cadets recovering.
On the next play the H. M.A. punt was b locked by its own backfield , Billy Bob Peel, V. E. S. end, recover- ing. After two unsuccessful passes, Van Noppen hit Bill Stokes on the goal for the Bishops' last tally. Van Noppen 's conversion attempt was good.
Standing out for the Bishops in the line were Peel, Duke Taliaferro, Pritch Lindsley, and AI Shortt. Lawson, Hut- ter, Pierson, Ray, and Van Noppen s h o w e d u p well in t h e b a c k f i e l d . While he never could get away for a T. D., the Cadets' Abernathy showed plenty of speed and elusiveness, and Orzano and Scott stood out in the line.
