THE HEADMASTER'S STUDY
As these lines are written the 36th session of our School has settled into the familiar pattern. The old boys and the counselors have taken up their duties; the new boys are learning something of higher standards and (in some cases) of demerits and the pleasures of walking. It is too early yet to venture a forecast but signs point to a successful session of high accomp lishment.
W e have already had visits from some of our younger alumni and we are looking forward to October 27th and Homecoming Day, when we hope that a large number of former V. E. S. boys will be here for the game with St. Christopher's, for the alumni meet- ing and luncheon and for the Home- coming Dance. And this year the distaff side will not be overlooked at the luncheon, at which provision will be made for the wives of alumni. The cards which Mr. Gannaway will send out to the alumni will give fuller infor- mation about the schedule for the day, on which boys and masters alike will join in welcoming our old boys.
At a recent meeting of the Lynch- burg Chapter of our alumni, I was asked to mention again the action taken at the general meeting in Octo- ber, 1950, at which it was voted to use
· alumni contributions fo r a scholarship fund for the sons of alumni. This fund is based upon annual gifts of two dol- lars from each alumnus,-more if the individual alumnus cares to give more, -and the fund will be used by the officers of the Association to enable sons of alumni to attend V. E. S. who might otherwise be unable to do so.
I want to emphasize the fact that these cont ributions are not used for overhead expenses but go entirely to ~he s c h o l a r s h i p f u n d . T h e M e t e o r goes regularly to every alumnus for whom we have an accurate address but it goes as the gift of the Trustees, who have appropriated money for this purpose, and of The Meteor staff, who expend much time and care and thought upon its publication. Gifts for such a purpose are cherished for, as the years pass, we hope to see a constantly increasing number of sons of alumni in the School.
