is only the football team getting in trim for the Miller Maulers. On the first play of the season mighty Nat Pendleton stomps on " Little Handy Andy" Williams, who was carried off the field screaming that he was fo:.Jied. The return match is slated for sometime in October.
Who is this he sees headed south like two love-birds? None other than "Abo" Frye and "I ain't fading away" Barbara, heJding for the Lynchburg hot-spots.
Over the hill comes Col. Hotchkiss and his new army of the Confederacy. They aim to take over the joint, but at the door stands General Barton, who with a few short words surrenders the school to tho boys, with a few restric- tions.

The Old Astrologer
The old man of the observatory is roused v!olently by an unearthly clammc~. Is it Gabriel's last toot, is it New Year's Day again? No, it sounds like rocks in a tomato can, so it could be nothing else but the V. E. S. bell.
He starts to turn over and go back to that wonderful occupation of sleep, but then remembers that he has to look down and check on the ole 160 acres. He grobs his trusty telescope and hustles over to the Guru model bay window. He quickly focu ses the tube and sees a shadowy figure sneak- ing over to the infirmary. Burglary on V. E. S. campus? A second look brings a sigh of relief. It's only Dr. Barton heading for "Ye old Infirmary Gambling Casino," for a couple of cracks at the poker table.
Shifting his gaze to another part of the 160 he sees a flustrated figure slaving over a little black book. Look- ing for a date? No, it is Jo Jo. The school's opening a few days early this year has completely fouled up his d(ly-by-day joke and wisecrack book. He had to reform the whole thing.
A few degrees to the left he sees none other than "flowers of spring- time'' Lum Pearson expounding of the glories of being a V. E. S. student to one of the new boys.
Down on the demerit track he sees "I got a million of 'em" Jim Barrett taking a few warm-up laps in prepara- tion for the coming winter campaign. Jim says that he's going to walk 'em counter clockwise this year because he was walking in clockwise circles all summer.
In the V. E. S. store, Jimmie Farin- holt was nearly fired for dishonesty when the Guru found him giving away the free samples.
Out on the athletic field he sees what seems to be mass murder, but it

Sept. IS-Braxton and Hudgins go into mourning as Glass defeats Hamp- , ton, 14-7. Tough luck boys! (This column is written by a Lynchburg boy).
Sept. 1 6 -Mr. Forster delivers the first sermon of the year.
Sept. 17-How bleak the demerit track looks. Oh well, between Mr. Banks, Steiglitz and "Nails" this should be fixed up pretty soon.
Sept. 18-Has the war ended? Is it the fourth of July-No-it is only Farinholt's third period study hall.
