A BRIEF PAUSE
THE SCHOOL PEAKLAND
THE KILL
Let's Go
As classes end each day at V.E.S.
there may be observed three general migrations. The first, of course, is of the athletes of the school headed for the gym. They thrive on the fresh air and sunshine of the basketball court. (That sunshine costs money, boys).
Another group, and probably the larger of the three, is the "Peakland Club," known to some as the "Fat Boy's Club." Any normal day this adventurous group may be seen charging over hill and dale (orphan- age and road) to that exotic, far re- moved haven of the far east, the Oakwood Tea Room. Here may be purchased a ll manner of sweets, to- baccos, carbohydrates and general good cheer, things upon which this " Fat Boys Club" thrives. Leading
this lusty bunch may b~ seen John " Porky" Heyward, the great "wom- an hunter," carrying all the essentials of an African safari. Cameras, note- books and a caravan of supply slaves. Second in command is that man who studies biology in Chemistry Class by observing whales in the light globes, that cigar smoking (because, they are m-i-1-d!) aristocrat, Edison Bir- mingham. Among the gun bearers
we see a brutish monster of gorilla strength, that has been captured and tamed. This specimen has several names, such as "Weensie" or "pussy- foot" or just plain Owens. Usually he is pretty tame but today his wrath has been stirred, and with the help of "Butterball" Bondurant he is forc- ing "Mouthhard" Douthat, the gang toughie from Roanoke, to carry all the loot. Between strokes of the whip "Mouthard" may be heard,
'Ya'll live to regret dis day, ya joick." In the rear of the caravan, carried in a most grotesque manner by her two personal slaves, "High Life" Boyer and "Lockjaw" Wilson, we see "Jeannie the Hyenie" Farin- holt, that bearded queen of the jungle.
Legend has it that this mys- terious "nymph " may be seen wan- dering at night through the jungles of Peakland looking for a long-lost class ring. Until this ring is found her power over men is lost.
This mad group always on the look- out for "Wimmin" suddenly spots a rare specimen walking along in a trance and sighing with every breath, "Nat Pendleton, my hero!" In the rush to set up cameras, place gun- men and get into the picture, John "garbage-gut" Galey is trampled and left to die in the gutter. And so the caterpillar moves on. "Oak- wood Tea Room here we come."
The third group is the "Ruesens bunch." They are usually the same as the Peakland safari, t raveling south once in a while for different scenery. However, there are a few rare additions. For instance, here we have Joe "Skin and bones" Barber in hot argument with "Squeaks" Bal- dock on the evils of alcoholism. Joe is taking a specia l course under " Pro- hibition Gannaway," but Squeaks is
all for it, having been driven to drink by V.M.I.'s nocturnal marches. All this time "Juicy plug" Spear and Dick Donovan, "the little black goat who went astray," are gleefully swinging (Continued on p&ge 14, col. 2)
I Love The Infirmary
The infirmary is a place of peace and rest. It is the only place in school where one can sleep through the morning bell and stay up after the last bell at night.
When I get tired of school. and sometimes demerit troubles, I usually retire to that sweet place of rest.
It is not very hard to become an inmate of the infirmary, and once you put .on your pajamas and get into bed, your troubles cease to be. The radio, if you have one, blares forth its music and advertisements and homework is a 'thing of the past. Breakfast is served in bed, as are all the other meals for that matter. Alka- Sel+zer is administered and you sink back into bed thinking of the poor boys in classes and study hall.
Is the infirmary a place for the sick? In some rare cases, yes, but for the most part the little wooden building is an ever-available place of rest.
The above article is taken from a theme written by a prominent maling- erer whose name is withheld by re- quest.
Vacation Is Here!
The Meteor wishes to express the hope that all, including the faculty, will enjoy the Spring Holidays. Every one be good, and by all means, don't forget to return!
