A Tribute To Our Track Non-Lettermen
Every spring our athletics are divided between baseball and track. We do not wish to discriminate be- tween the two sports, and for that matter all sports are dealt with in this article, but as a typical example, we shall use track.
Track is a grueling test of strength and endurance. It is a strong com- bination of will power, skill, determi- nation and self-denial. Many believe it is one of the hardest tests of these athletic qualities and therefore is a sure proving ground of the true ath- lete .
In nearly every sport, besides the first team, there is a second team or second string. Sometimes they serve as reserve strength or as insurance against the injury of o first man. And sometimes, as in track, it is made up of those boys who cannot quite meet the requirements of the first team. Those athletes who are not the stars of the team, so to speak, but are still in there trying and striving for higher goals.
This year at V.E.S. we have had o winning track season because of the fine efforts and fine quality of our first men. The boys have really done a commendable job, and have done a great deal for the school and for their coach.
But let us pause a moment and look a little behind the scenes. It is said that a good team makes a better first team. This is certainly true and has been proven beyond doubt by the V.E.S. track team this year. We may say that this season has seen some of the finest non-lettermen effort ever put out. These were the boys who may not have had quite enough ex- perience or training. They may. ~ot have had quite enough age or abdtty, but those things come with time. Yet
these are the boys who kept the team spirit up to what it was. These ore the boys who have striven faithfully day after day, seldom complaining, and always working for higher stan- dards for themselves and for the team. Therefore let us pay tribute to the great bunch of "non-lettermen" who will certainly carry on in the fu- ture.
Triangular Meet
Co·captains George Barlow and Sammy Peirson led the Bishops to victory in a triangular meet with Brookville and Bedford, by account- ing for 36 of the 53 points tallied by V.E.S. When the lost race was ended, V.E.S. had 53 points, Bedford 42:0 and Brookville 37:0. Barlow collected 21 points and Peirson 15. A very soggy track reduced the times con- siderably. The Bishops took 6 of the
