boys worked hard in a new system under a new coach to overcome these handicaps that were not of their own making. Spirit on the team devel- oped gradually until, by the time of the last game against Randolph- Macon Academy, the esprit de corps was heartwarming to behold.
Both our offense and defense were ferratic, looking very good at times and ineffective a t others. V.E.S. had moments of brilliance, such as: I. Playing W oodberry Forest on even terms for three quarters after a jit- tery, mistake-filled first quarter. 2.
Giving a good St. Christopher team a tough battle for a half on Home- coming Day. 3. Being the first prep school to score on Fishburne Military Academy. 4. PIaying a whale of a ball qame in the last game against a fin e Randolph-Macon Academy team.
O:;r team was built to a large ex- tent around tho running and line- backinq of Joe Barber. His combina- tion of bulldozing, breakaway running and terrific tacklinq often provided the spark to give the team momen- tum and keep it from becoming dis- couraged in a losing cause. Co-cap- tain Sammy Peirson, one of the hard- est workers on the team, strived valiantly to learn the intricacies of T-quarterbacking in one sea son, thereby sacrificing much of the glory that would have been his at halfback, a position more suited to his talents. Boys like co-captain Barlow, Grubb, Milton, Barber, Hutter, Stokes, Ruffin, W atts, Dirom, Kemper, Farinholt, Bradsher, and Hunt worked diligently and played with an intense desire
that should have made the V. E. S. partisans proud of them. There were others, of course, like senior Owens Jones who, through hard plugging in practice and games, won the cooches' admiration and his "V"; ond senior red Schilling who gove a good performance at offensive guard in his first year at football. The whole line deserves commendo- tion; th ey were always outweighed but never outfought.

The list of boys deserving a pat on the back is about as long as the varsity roster, but there isn't space to comment on them all. They were o fighting crew, and they refused to give up when facing great odds, thus showing characteristics that will carry them far in the future. For this reo- son, I congratulate the boys who represented V.E.S. on the football field this fall, and I'm sure the entire school is proud of them. To the sen- iors on the squad, my regrets for hoving such a short association with you in football, and my sincere thanks for a job well done.

set shots from 20 ft. out. From then on victory was alwoys in sight. Jim McCurry regained possession of the ball several times from then on, and showed constant fight and good playing. The excellent ball handling and passing of Paul Fulton was the outstanding feature of the game, and along with the dead-eye -:>f Sam (not George) Peirson contribute-:! much to the victory.
The Bishops were slow to find the range in the first period and were briefly stopped by the 2-7 defense of Bedford. But then V.E.S.'s 22-1 offense began to click toward the end of the period which closed with Bedford leading 9-8. The second quarter sensation, McCracken, then led the way by puttinq us in the lead 25-17 by the end of the first half. The V.E.S. small but aggressive team opened their season last Sat- urday afternoon by whipping Bed- ford High School 44-38. Although the team has looked pretty good during pre-season practice, there was some wonder. However, the victory was a pleasant surprise to all and it showed us we really have a team.
Scott McCracken started the ball rolling early in the second quarter when he dropped in four consecutive
