V. E. S. TRIPPED BY
E. H. S., 20-0
A good defensive game by the
Bishops was spoiled by an abundance of bad breaks as the Bishops lost their second game of the season to the Episcopal High School Maroons, at Alexandria 20-0. The visitors scored first early in the opening quarter w h e n a n E. H . S . l i n e m a n b l o c k e d Blair Farinholt's punt from deep in V. E. S. territory and carried over the goal. Just before the half ended they scored again on a disputed play which was ruled a touchdown. The Bishops, unable to get their offense in high gear, remained in the hole for most of the second half, and in the third quarter E. H. S. scored again
on a drive featuring the running of Cathcart, Rhinehart, and Hunter Faulconer. The two teams battled on even terms the rest of the way. Runs by Farinholt on a "bootleg" play and by John McKee on a pitchout were the Bishops' main ground gainers. "Bootie" Cranz also uncorked a long run after faking a pass in the second quarter. Big Vern Keefer and Brent Nash were the hard-hitting
stickouts on defense, and guard Cloyd Philpott showed up well in the line. This game left the Bishops with a 4-2 record with two games to play.

FISHBURNE, 13-6
V. E. S. came home from Waynes- boro victorious in their final game, whipping a big but disorganized Fish- burne team 13-6. Fishburne scored first in the opening quarter on a long drive, but the Bishops, again led by their magnificent field marshall, Blair Farinholt, came roaring back. Midway
in the second quarter C. R. Jones crashed over for a V. E. S. score. John McKee converted to make it 7-6 and the half ended with the score just that. The Bishops, helped by some heavy penalties against Fishburne in the first half, went on their own in the last and when John McKee re- covered a fumble on the Fishburne 31, V. E. S. quickly punched over the score, Keefer doing the point-making honors. Fishburne never seriously threatened and the game ended at 13-6. The offensive line looked great
again, and Owen Harper and Cloyd Philpott looked the best. Playing their last game for the Bishops were tho incomparable Farinholt, possibly th o greatest football player ever to wear a V. E. S. uniform; Co-Captain Ranny Turner, Brent Nash, Owen Harper,
C. R. Jones, P. B. Winfree, Elvey Thomas, big Richard Matthews, and the hard-running, hard-hitting Keefer who was a standout in every game.
The stone wall
A powerful Randolph-Macon foot·
ball team, led by halfback Chud Leaderman, were stunned at Johnson Field by a gang of fired-up, hard· hitting V. E. S. Bishops and though the game ended in a 0-0 tie, the Bishops threatened all the way and were on the three-inch line when the final whistle blew. R. M. A. began the ganie with a bang, their kickoff receiver taking the kickoff 55 yards before being jolted by P. B. Win· free. They threatened, but the Bishop line held. From then on until the half it was a nip-and-tuck affair showing few first downs and many punts. The
second half V. E. S. began to ro1 but Keefer was stopped a foot out when the game ended. The running of Blair Farinholt, Verne Keefer, and C. R. Jones led the battling Bishops' offense, and the many standouts in the defensive array included Brent Na sh, Ranny Turner, John McKee, Bootie Cranz. Keefer, Jones and Judge Dillard hit hard in the defen· sive backfield and stopped many a drive. The offensive line played great ball and was led by Cliff Towe and Cloyd Philpott, along with Nash
Turner , and big Owen Harper. The Yellow Jackets had been beaten only once in seven games.
