THIS SEASON'S OUTLOOK
School J.V.'s ore buckling down to hard work in preparation for the coming season under the direction of Coaches Bar-
tol and Harris.
Running essentially the same plays that the Varsity uses, the J.V.'s should be a powerful squad. The strongest position on the squad seems to be quarterback, with Jim Woo1ery holding the edge over Dan Payne. Also in the backfield will be Horton, Gillespie, McNulty, Shanklin, Elliott, and Rollins.
The line will be stronger than last year, according to Coach Bartol. Moye, Cannon, Bynum, Mittendorf, Huntsberry, Lynn, Hunt, Atherholt, Camden, and Hyer are the backbone of the line.
The Bishops open the season with a starting eleven that seems fairly strong, but a squad that appears to lack any sort of re~e-ve strength .
Coach Rock Lee has been work- ing with 25 men, eight of whom have letters, for the past two and a half weeks b u t minor injuries have held up the conditioning program to some extent. Two of the 25 men on the squad were borrowed from the junior varsity so.that Lee could hold intra- squad scnmmages.
In Lee 's opinion this
could be stronger than last season's, one that won four, lost three and tied one-if the reserves hold out. Last year, V.E.S. totalled 200 points and held its opponents to 120. Lee would settle right now for the 25 points per game average if he can find ways of cutting down his op- ponents' point output.
Stronger Defensively
V.E.S. will be stronger defensively this year, Lee said. At the moment, he can put II good tacklers, all of whom can move adequately, on the field. Seven of his eight backs may be in the starting defensive team. They include Co-captain Blair Farin- holt, Guy Ellett, Vern Keefer, form- er E. C. Glass High School star; Steve Cowper, John McKee, Bootie Cranz and C. R. Jone-. Farinholt will be safety man. Ellett is a de- fensive halfback; Keefer and Cowper are linebackers; McKee is a guard,
Cranz a tackle and Jones an end. Cliff Towe, at halfback, Co-cap- tain Ranny Turner at guard, Brent Nash, the 6-4, 205-pounder, at tackle. and Dick Matthews, at end,
will fill out the defensive squad. Loss of Milt Barber by graduation
cut down the Bishops' breakaway potential. but seven big boys and another smaller scatback make the offensive picture look bright. Farin - holt, a 170-pounder, will guide the backs from quarter.
C. R. Jones, at 190 pounds, and Bootie Cranz, a wopping 205- pounder, have nailed down halfback berths, while Vern Keefer, I 73, will take over the same spot he played with the Hilltoppers, fullback. Chal- lenging Jones ond Cranz for sta rt- ing jobs are Ellett, at 166, and Mc- Kee, ot 175, while Cowper, at 170, is rated right behind Keefer. Lee describes Cowper as the most im- proved player on the squad, and he's also sweet on Ray Marley, a little 140-pounder, whose work as either a quarterback or halfback ap- pears to be improving daily.
Passing is rated os definitely bet- ter by the V.E.S. coach. Cranz is the No. I tosser but Farinholt is working on that phase of the game. Their targets are Hardy Dillard, Keefer, Matthews, Gibby Roe, Jones,
McKee, Ellett, Far inholt, a n d Dunn. At the moment, the weakest spot en the squad appears to be the of- fensive line. It has Dillard, 140, and
Matthews, 180, as ends, John Brady, 180, and Cloyd Philpott, 210, as tackles; Ranny Turner, 177, and Cliff Towe, 154 as guards, and Nash at
center.
The only change in the schedule this year from last has Fishburne replacing Appomattox.
The squad has set as its first aim to beat Miller School and has an overall aim of gaining an even break for the season.

130 Pound Team
Under the direction of Mr. Fritz and Mr. Lipp, the 130 Pound Team is preparing to open the se;,son. Un- less looks deceive, this should be one of the best 130 Pound Teams that V.E.S. has had in years.
At present, the most likely line in- cludes Lee, Kizer, Waddell, Cerveny, Barnes, Wayburn, Neamand, Harris, Ourednik, Stone, Walker, and Scholl. The backfield is shaping up well with Jenkins, Rand, Pace, Childrey, and Freyer.
All in all, the team appears strong- er in the backfield with a good line as well. Although the boys lack experi- ence, this drawback will be overcome after a game or two.
