November, 1954 No.2
MR. HARPER
The catalogue describes Mr. Her- bert Harper as the bursar of the Vir- ginia Episcopal School, but his actual duties go far beyond what is implied by that title. In addition to his duties as treasurer, he carries out the super-
vision of the grounds, and buildings and of the farm and deals with many details of the business side of operat- ing a school.
His tasks on the school itself vary from seeing that there is an adequate supply of coal in the winter to hand- ing out allowances on Monday, and on the farm his duties cover as wide a range. They cover everything from ordinary routine to emergencies and semi-emergencies. H i s everyday work includes a check on the welfore and needs of the school and farm, the work as bursar, and general super- vision. Mr. Harper's tasks vary from day to day as anyone who has any- thing to do with school or farm man- agement will tell you. He is at hand at all hours to see that the needs of the Virginia Episcopal School are met.
Mr. Harper was born at Brookneal, Virginia. During World War II, he spent three years in the Navy aboard the USS Parry. While he was aboard this ship at Okinawa, it was sunk by a Japanese Kamikaze suicide plane. After eighteen months hospitalization, he received a medical discharge.
He went to Virginia Commercial College after the war and finished there in February of 1949. He com- pleted his course in Business Adminis- tration. After finishing this course, he worked for the Brookneal News- paper, the Union Star, as bookkeeper and proofreader for a period of about a year. Then he went to North Carolina and the Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company, where he worked for two months as a packing house fo reman. From there, he came to V. E. S. on November I, 1951. This month marks his third anniversary as bursar here.
During his spare hours, Mr. Harper enjoys racing cars, deep sea fish- ing, and baseball. His favorite team is the Detroit Tigers.
To quote from the V. E. S. cata- logue, the printed page can do but partial justice to the living organism. In a similar way, this account can give
but a partial impression of Mr. Harper and his work. His job is one of the school's most difficult, and he carries it out most ably.
