THE SCHOOL
[
"MA" BATES
Mr·. Myrtle A. Bates, known around
here os "Ma," has one of the hardest job in the school. Three times a day, seven doys a week, she has to satisfy ravenous appetites of I I0 hungry boys. Many of us who are too quick to complain about the food would probably change our minds if we knew
the problems she has to deal with.
On an allotment of $.90 per day per boy, she puts three well-balanced meals on the table. This allotment figures out to $.30 per meal, but when one subtracts the enormous milk bill, it comes out to be only $.22 for a meal-a meal which would, incident- aly, cost anywhere from one to two
dollars in Lynchburg.
Mrs. Bates started out as manager
of the Tea Room at Natural Bridge. Then for six years she was assistant manager of the Boxwood Inn out on he Sweet Briar campus. After that, he spent two years in a similar capacity at the Old Dominion Candy Company. She then became hostess
which to eat here. She feels that her meals would be more fully appreci- ated if we could sit and relax at meal- time. It is also her opinion that a plan could be worked so that only freshmen would wait on tables. It would also make for a great deal more efficiency if they had additional training.
During the summer, Ma goes to the Mountain Lake Biological Station, which is a summer school of the Uni- versity of Virginia.
Mrs. Bates carries out her duties very efficiently, and although we may complain about the food she pre- pares, we must admit that we don't mind eating two or three helpings of it.
