VARSITY FOOTBALL SUMMARY
W:th the 13-6 loss to St. Christo- phers, the Bishops concluded their season with a 2-6 record. This, on •he surface, wouldn't appear to be much of a record. However, with a break or two in the final two games the record well could have read 4-4.
The season started with a topsy turvy game with Miller School. The lead changed hands seve ral times before the Cadets emerged vic- torious 25-14. Miller School had one of their best teams in years and they used a tricky spread formation to befuddle us.
Augusta was our first victim the next Saturday. Lee Mastin was the spark plug of this game. Then fol- lowed successive defeats by Wood- berry and Fishburne. In the Fishburne game the young Bishops came o f age. They held the Cadets to only two scores in the first half and the tackling and ball handling was a vast improvement over the W ood- berry game. The confidence gained in this game was demonstrated when
we decisively defeated Norfolk Academy 25-0 the next week.
For homecoming we had to con- tend with the usual powerhouse from Alexandria. The E. H. S. boys struck fast and won the game in the open- ing half. Fumbles really killed us that day.
In the last two games against R. M. A. and St. Christophers the team played good ball but went down to 18-12 and 13-6 defeats. R. M. A. scored the winning touch- down on a last second pass and the
f:nal whistle cut short a drive toward a possible tie in the Saint's game.

BISHOPS BEATEN BY LATE RALLY 18-12
Randolph-Macon Academy's foot- ball squad broke a 12-12 tie with less than a minute left in the game. They marched 75 yards in three plays to win 18-12.
The Bishops started scoring in the second quarter on a 12 yard pass from Bootie Cranz t o Hardy Dillard in the end zone. The game was tied up when R. M. A. scored on the kickoff. Neither of the extra points was good.
In the third period V. E. S. kept the ball in R. M. A. territory until Joe Kelley raced 80 yards, but the touchdown was nullified by a penalty against the cadets. The ball was kept on R. M. A. ground for the re- mainder of the period.
In the final period on the second play R. M. A. went ahead by 12-6 with Kelley going around end 17 yards for a touchdown. Then the Bishops retaliated. With less tha n a minute remaining Tay Byrum broke over tackle for 5 yards and a T. D.
On the kick-off R. M. A. moved the ball to the 40 yard line and they completed two consecutive passes for the final, winning goal.

a pass from Tay Byrum for nine yards and a T.D. This left the score 6-6 at the half.
The ball was kept in the Saints' ter- ritory most of the third quarter but no touchdown was made for the Bishops.
In the fourth quarter, St. Chris- topher's needed a first down and they used Harry Towne to get it, pushing the Bishops back t o their twenty-three yard line. This set the Saints up for t hei r winning t ouch- down. The ball was carried over by Bill DeColny fro m the three yard line. DeColny went over for the ex- tra point also.

mendous Groza-like kicks and Nel- son Showalter was about the best tackler on the field. Tay Byrum was a good ball handler and improved steadily as a passer. Pat McNulty showed a great deal of drive toward the end of the season. Frank Craig- hill ran well every time we gave him the ball. George Ross, punting left- footed, got off some beauties. Steve Royal showed promise of developing into a top flight player next year. Blackie Stith proved to be one of the fast men on the squad. Butch Watkins showed great promise as a passer. Lloyd Horton played good defensive ball at end. Gil Sayers did well in his first year of gridiron ac- tivity. Jim Bickford played alert football all year. S t a r k Mundy showed good defensive strength at tackle.
Despite the 2-6 record, this team improved steadily during the sea- son. The brightest spot was that the sophomores and juniors showed the most improvement. W e have a nucleus of a good team returning next fall.
Saints Defeat Bishops 13-6 In Hard-Fought Contest
St. Christopher's School of Rich- mond downed V. E. S. 13-6 with a score in the fourth period.
The Saints scored first in the open- ing quarter when they went over with a pass from the twenty-three yard line thrown by quarterback Mc- Eachern to Power. The extra point was no good.
The Bishops' line came back fiercely and opened holes for the backfield on a long powerful ground attack. Hardy Dillard found himself all alone in the end zone and caught
