THE SCHOOL
Several fine sets of detailed his- tories will also prove va luable. George Bancroft's History of the United States and James Truslow Adams' four-volume work on the same subject are most useful. Of great importance is Beard's two-volume The Rise of American Civilization. Gamaliel Bradford's American Por- traits, 1875-1900 highlights several important personages, and Frederick Lewis A llen 's delightful Only Y ester- day gives a fascinating picture of American life in the decade after World War I. A thrilling and dra- matic view of two of history's greatest conquerors is to be had in Harold Lamb's Tamerlane and Genghis Khan, both of which make exciting reading.
Books acquired from recent pur- chases include two novels which are modern classics- Sienkiewicz' Quo Vadis and Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind. A modern re-telling of the Arthurian legends in King Ar- thur and the Round Table will interest many students. Alan Paton's widely accla imed The Land and the People of South Africa gives important in- formation in excellent literary style and will be a considerable help to students of history and geography.
Three recent additions to our col- lection of biography are a life of Mark Twain, Sheean's Mahatma Gandhi and Merriman's recent Meet Mr. Eisenhower.
The history section also received attention in the recent purchases. Additions included U. N.: The First Ten Years, by Clark Eichelberger, Vernadsky's A History of Russia, and Langsam's The World Since 1919.
In summary of the year's acquisi- tions, it can be said that the V.E.S. Library has received some excellent additions in many fields. For this, we are grateful to our many benefac- tors, whose generous contributions of worthwhile materials will enrich the lives and studies of many young men for years to come. However, the library still has its deficiencies and still needs to increase its materials in several areas. W e shall be looking forward to an even more successful year next fall and trusting to the generosity of our patrons to assist us in our work.
