HENRY DISBROW PHILLIPS 1882- 1955
Those of us who were present at the Final Exercises last J u n e re me m- ber well the commanding figure of Bishop Phillips in our Chapel as he preached the Final Sermon to the Class of 1955 and again, the next day, as he delivered the diplomas to the members of that Class. Little did we think that these were his last serv- ices and that, when he laid aside his Episcopal v e s t m e n t s a f t e r Evening Prayer, he would don them no more. Death called him from our midst a few weeks later, on June 29th.
It is not easy to assess briefly the value of his contribution to the life of Virginia Episcopal School. As President of the Board of Trustees. from 1938 until his retirement in the spring of 1954, he gave freely and generously of his time and thought to the affairs of the School. On the
material side, he was directly respon- sible for many of the improvements in our physical plant which have been made within recent years; he per·
sonally found the money for these im- provements and often directed and supervised the use of the money. His interest in the life and growth of the School was constant and deep. This interest may not always have been apparent to a casual observer, for Bishop Phillips always strove to get work done by arousing the interest of others, by inspiring them to do what
had to be done. His wise and patient counsel, his firmness w~cn fir mn ess was needed, his sympathetic under- standing of the daily problems of the School, and his inspiring enthusiasm in days of trouble all combine to
make his guidance deeply felt and one may rightfully say that life at Virginia Episcopal School is b r o a d e r and richer because of the benign in- fluence of Henry Disbrow Phillips.
