LIBRARY NEWS
Of all the recently acquired pub- lications in science, no ne has at- tracted more attention than "The World We Live In," given by John Heyward. An extremely fine addition to the library, this includes the series of articles which appeared in " Life" magazine on the origins of the earth and the development of the variety of its plants and animals.
A large amount of biographical material has also been acquired re- cently. Subjects of some of the full length biographies include Marshal Foch, Major General Lejuene of the Marine Corps, Darwin, Franklin Roosevelt, Sam Houston, Disraeli, Napoleon Ill, Garibaldi, Eisenhower, and several others. " Famous Men of Science" provides short biographies of many of the most significant con- tributors to modern science.
"Twentieth Century Authors," to- gether with o supplement published in 1955, gives up to date informa- tion which is invaluoble for much of the work done in advanced English courses. "Our Literary Heritage," a
pictorial history of American litera- ture by Von Wyck Brooks and 0. L. Bettermann, combines a wealth of illustrations with very informative text and should prove attractive to leisure readers as well as to stu- dents d oing research.
Two interesting books on explora- tion have a lso been added. "W orlds Without End" gives readable ac:
counts of explorations from 2000 B. C. to the present, while Admiral Richard E. Byrd's "Alone" gives his personal account of his adventures in An arctica .
History is another field to which valuable additions have been made. Shepherd's "Historical Atlas" has re- ceived very wide use from studenis of history. The first two volumes of Winston Churchill's "History of the English Speaking Peoples" are now on the shelves and the others will be acquired as soon as they are pub- lished. Bruce Catton's "U. S. Grant- ond the American Military Tradition" and Burke Davis's "Gray Fox-Robert E. Lee and the Civil War" will tem- porarily sotisfy the unending demand for more books o.1 the Civil War, a period of American history which never fails to fascinate a large num- ber of students. "The Crucial De- c a d e - A m e r i c a , 1 9 4 5 -1 9 5 5 " a n d "American Epoch: A History of the United States since 1890" are use- ful additions to current history.
"Europe on the Eve: The Crises of Diplomacy, 1933-39" is another im- portant addition to this phase of his- tory.
Among the other recent ac- quisitions ore books on religion, phil- osophy, fine arts, sports, and a variety of other topics. There are also a number of novels, both mod-
ern ones and classics, that have been popular with the students.
