BASEBALL PREVIEW-1957
For the first time in 6 years the Bishops will walk on the baseball field without a lefthanded pitcher capable of striking out 15 men per game. The days of Blair Farinholt and Hardy Dillard are gone and for a change the V. E. S. infielders will have a chance to get into the game. From what has been shown so far the infield will hold up very well under the strain, but the rest of the team is inexperienced and it will take a little time to determine just where the team will stand when the season ends.
Righthander Dale Carter will have to bear the burden on the pitching mound. He is the only pitcher with

previous experience. Dale has a good curve ball and should come along as the season moves on. Shortstop Jimmy Dillon, Pat McNulty and Len Capetanos round out the pitching staff, and no one knows which of them will emerge as the second pitcher.
Hutch Overbey, one of two re- turning lettermen, will return to his natural position at first base after a year at third. He will provide the team with a good target for the in- fielders to throw at and is a long ball hitter.
Sandy Cunningham is leading the pack in the battle for second base. He was the best hitter on last year's JV team and should develop into a good defensive player as soon as he
gets used to the new position. Teddy Webb and Jake Hill are still pushing for a starting berth at this position.
At shortstop is the slickest player on t h e t e a m , J i m m y Dillon. H e is very sure on ground balls, gets rid of the ball in a hurry, covers the base well und is a tough man to keep off base as a hitter. He is also a letter- man and a long with Overbey will serve as co-captain.
Pat McNulty, reserve outfielder last year, has looked best so far of the contestants for third base. He has a strong arm in the field and hits a long ball. Jim Bickford, who played some ball at Norfolk Academy and Butch W a t k i n s who p l a y e d a few games last seasoil at the position for the Bishops ore possibilties also. Dale Carter is also a capable third base- man when he is not pitching.
The catching department is in the hands of Lee Jenkins. Lee was last year's second string catcher and shows promise of becoming a good hitter.
The only solid looking outfielder is newcomer, Penn Joslyn. He wi I hold down centerfield and bat well
up in the batting order. Mike Boyer, a reserve outfielder on last year's team is a much improved player and will probably break into the lineup in the right field. Dan Floyd, Len CapeĀ· tanos, and Nelson Showalter are bat- tling for outfield berths and if they don't come through one or more o; the infielders-Watkins, Hill or Webb may wind up in the outfield.
