No. I
The following character sketch was written by Barksdale Kizer, of the Senior Class, as a tribute to his grandfather, Dr. Elisha Barksdale, who died recently. Dr. Barksdale 's life was one of sacrifice and serv- ice. He was actively interested in V. E. S., and we note his passing with a sense of regret and loss.
Over a door at the end of the hos- pital corridor was a sign which read "Doctor's Library." I opened the door and walked in.
If anyone had asked me then why I was there, I'm sure I could not have given a very sensible answer. Of course I had been there before, and I suppose it was a sentiment that I held for that room that drew me there again. I wanted to go back and relive an experience which had taken place there a few years before. I wanted to recall what had hap- pened on that day when this room, in which I was now standing, was dedicated to a man I had learned to love and respect, my grandfather who was my "Big Doctor."
A solemn stillness filled the room as the last evening shadows played on the soft green rug. Seeing that I was alone, I did not have that con- spicuous feeling that comes over us when we find ourselves in places where we have no real business.
As I glanced around the room, I saw the portrait of an elderly gentle- man in a dark brown suit. His hair was a dull gray, but there was a tw inkle in his eye which does not usually go along with old age. His expression was that of someone who was just about to tell you a joke, the kind of somebody who makes Jou feel happy when you're depresse or glad to be alive when you haven't got a friend. But behind the smile he wore was a tired look of one who had seen years of hard work, and long working hours. As my eyes dropped from the picture, I saw a marble plaque on which were in- scribed these words, " He did so much for so many."
Looking arou nd the room, I re- called that Sunday afternoon when t h e room was given as a medical library to honor my grandfather in gratitude for the years of service he had given the hospital. At that

NEW HEADMASTER
(Continued from p11ge 3)
School for two years. He then left
for Charleston, S. C., where the job as Headmaster of Porter Academy awaited him.
He left Porter Academy to attend the seminary located in Alexandria, Va. Mr. Walke is now a deacon in the Episcopal Church and is studying to become a priest.
Mrs. Walke is the former Miss Rose Anderton Davies, and they have three children, Martha, Roddy, and Diana.
Since Mr. Walke has come to V. E. S. he has shown great interest in sports. He coaches the 135-pound football team with Mr. Barton and he also made possible the trip for the entire student body to see the varsity game at Appomattox. He has shown great consideration towards the maintenance of the school. The lounge has been completely redeco-
rated and adds much glamor to the entrance.
Students and faculty welcome Mr. Walke and hope he will be happy as the new Headmaster.
O n e
will be spotted throughout the school.
The Library has new filing cabi- nets and the card catalog system is nearing completion. The library also has some new tables with more to come in the near future.
The school looks a lot better since we left last year. Let's try to keep it looking like it does now the rest of the year.
