2:30-Saturday, November 9, 1957-With Alumni still streaming down
from their luncheon, E. H. S. kicked off to Sandy Cunningham and 137 pound safetyman returned the ball from the IS to the 35. Cunningham then gained two on a quarterback sneak over right guard. Johnny Kramer replaced Cunning- ham and pitched out to Dempsey Hodges, who grabbed the ball 5 yards be- hind the line of scrimmage, took advantage of cut off blocks by Lloyd Horton and Chip Wood and a diving outside block on the linebacker by Jim Shanklin, suddenly cut back to the left side of the field and within a split second had a 5 yard lead on the surprised E. H. S. secondary. There was no catching him as he maintained his lead for 63 yards into the end zone. Kramer's placement
was long and true into the mote surrounding the track.
With spirits high, Tommy Jamison kicked off to Stewart Saunders on the E. H. S. 35; was spilled on the same yard line by a fine tackle from Ralph Nash, the Bishops' 138 pound 1eft end. Saunders Midyette hit left guard for 2, where he was stopped by Bro. McClain. Already it was ob- vious that the Bishops were fired up for this one. Midyette tried left end and gained 3. Dashiell gained 5 at left guard for a first down, then swept right end on the Maroon's famous outside play, where Chip Wood sent him sprawling after ward- ing off Midyette's attempted block. Net loss, 8 yards! Wysong passed to Flippin in the right flat for 13 yards, Midyette gained 3 on a draw play, a n d E. H . S . w a s f o r c e d t o p u n t . 5 yards for offside on the first play. The Maroons moved the ball to the Bishops 27 where a 4th down pass failed as the defense stiffened and V. E. S. took over. Hodges lost 5 yards as he fumbled a pitchout but E. H. S. was offside. Hodges gained 4 at right tackle. Kramer picked up one on a sneak. Kramer passed to Wood, a jump pass, good for 8 yards. Joslyn lost a yard at right guard as the quarter ended. Skip Rawls gained 4 at left tackle, Kramer rolled out to his right and hit Hodges for 27 and a first down on the 28. Hodges lost 5 at left end. Kramer hit Wood with a quick pass for 2 yards, and on the next play jumped and hit Wood for 26 yards to the 5 yard line. Kramer gained 2 on a sneak but E. H. S. was offside. Kramer dived into the end zone on a sneak to put t h e Bishops a h e a d 13-0. Kramer's placekick was again down the mid- die for a 14-0.
THREE CHEERS FOR THE HEAD COACH
Jamison kicked off to Midyette end Nelson Showalter downed him with a great tackle on the 33. White gained 5 yards at left end. Dashiell was stopped for no gain. Midyette tried again on the draw play and AI Butler banged him down for a gain of only one yard and again E. H. S. had to punt. A poor punt went out of bounds on the 50. Hodges gained 6 yards at right tackle. Cunningham picked up 4 and a first down at right guard. Horton gained 5 yards at left tackle and Joslyn lost 2 yards at left guard. Kramer jumpeddassed to Lloyd Horton who grabbe the ball behind the E. H. S. secondary on the 20 and raced into the end zone (33 yard touchdown play) 20-0. Kramer again added the point 21-0.
Rutherford returned Jamison's kick- off to his 38 and from here E. H. S. drove to a touchdown with Midyette doing the brunt of the work. He finally swept left end for 13 and a TD. Dover kicked the extra point.
Davidson returned the kickoff to the 30. Joslyn and Rawls each gained
a yard as the half ended.
The job had been done but the
Maroons, substituting I 0 men each time the ball changed hands, were ready to try and wear V. E. S. down in the 2nd half. It began with V. E. S. prepared to slow things down, not take chances passing and to try and force E. H. S. to make the mis- takes.
E. H. S. received the kickoff, after halftime, and Rutherford returning the ball to the 45, almost breaking loose. Horton making a saving tackle. Horton also ended the first E. H. S. drive of the 2nd half by tossing White for a I0 yard loss on a reverse.
Hodges, on sheer determination, 5
